Serie A Transfers: 10 New Signings to Watch in Italy This Season

    The 2010/2011 Serie A season was postponed last week due to a strike by the Italian Players' Association. As a result, Italian teams will have to rely on friendlies to assess the state of their teams going into the season.

    With just days left until the closure of the European transfer window, let us take a look at the new players in the Serie A who are likely to make a difference to their clubs' prospects.

    Note: Transfers from club to club within Italy will not be included.

Arturo Vidal

    Sign on Fee: €12.5 million

    From the early indications Arturo Vidal looks to be the signing Juventus need in the middle of the park. A pairing with Andrea Pirlo in the middle of the park will be something to look forward to for Juventus fans around the world as they try to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two seasons.

Alberto Aquilani

    After moving back to England after ending his successful spell withe Juventus last season Alberto Aquilani was thought to prove to be a crucial part of Kenny Dalglish's plans. However, an influx of Liverpool signings have seen Milan snatch the services of the Italian international. Seen as a replacement for Andrea Pirlo, the pass master is likely to control the Milan midfield.

    After facing so much competition for a start at Barcelona, youngster Bojan Krkic has made a move away from Spain in the hope of more playing time. With Mirko Vucinic leaving for Juventus, Bojan will spearhead the Roma attack. The youngster will look to fufill the expectations placed on him at such a young age.

Pablo Osvaldo

    Sign on Fee: €17.5 million

    Pablo Osvaldo scored 20 goals last season in Spain. He now returns to the Serie A an improved player from the days at Bologna where he only managed three goals. Osvaldo will have to live up to his price tag, but could prove to be one of the new stars of the Serie A. He will pair up with Bojan upfront.

    Inter seem to have this thing for signing talented wingbacks. The latest to arrive at the San Siro is Brazilian Jonathan. Tipped to be the next Maicon, the attacking fullback will look to make an impression in his debut Serie A season. From performances in the Trofeo TIM he looks to be a great prospect.

Marcelo Estigarribia

    Position: Midfielder

    Sign on Fee: Loan

    Juventus ended their hunt for a left midfielder by signing Paraguayan youngster Marcelo Estigarribia. During the Copa America the winger proved to be one of the best Paraguayan players on the team and a loan deal will give Juventus the chance to determine whether he will be a part of their plans going forward. The flair of the attacking South American will be something to look out for this season.

Miroslav Klose

    They say form is temporary and class is permanent. Miroslav Klose is arguably one of the best German strikers of the last decade, and although he has gotten on in age he still has one or two good seasons within him. The goal poacher will team up with fellow new signing Cisse, with Zarate in behind he could prove prolific upfront. Be sure to look out for Lazio and Klose this season.

Djibril Cisse

    Cisse is no stranger to a new club, yet with every club he ha ventured to he has proved to be an effective addition. This time around it is off to the Serie A and, as previously mentioned, a partnership with Klose will not only bring experience to Lazio, but perhaps a top four finish.

Maarten Stekelenburg

    Nationality: Dutch

    Position: Goalkeeper

    Sign on Fee: €6 million

    After being tipped to join the likes of Manchester United, Maarten Stekelenburg chose to sign with Roma. With added security in between the sticks and a new attacking line. Roma look to be the complete package heading into the 2011-2012 season. Early indicators would suggest he has the attributes to be one of the great goalkeepers of the Serie A.

Taye Taiwo

    AC Milan have re-enforced their defensive line with the signing of highly rated Nigerian Taye Taiwo. The left back boasts a powerful free kick, pace and strength on the ball. Performances in the Trofeo TIM indicate he still has some work to do on settling in at Milan, but expect him to be a great addition on the left.
