So...the guys who run the BCS have taken things to levels we never saw coming. After claiming success from their system, the BCS will officially determine the NFL Playoffs starting this year! Wait, what?!

That's right, folks! The flawed system known as the BCS is making its way to the pro ranks. With that said, I wonder how they will plan for the controversy in the NFL? And how will Roger Goodell Castro handle this shocking news? Let's take a look at the current NFL Division Leaders as it stands today:

AFC

Tennessee Titans, AFC South (10-0)

Pittsburgh Steelers, AFC North (8-3)

New York Jets, AFC East (7-3)

Denver Broncos, AFC West (6-4)

NFC

New York Giants, NFC East (9-1)

Carolina Panthers, NFC South (8-2)

Arizona Cardinals, NFC West (7-3)

Green Bay Packers, NFC North (5-5)

These eight teams look to have a chance to at the NFL Playoffs, but the BCS Computer will most likely see things differently. It's no surprise that the BCS does play favorites. So would this mean that New England would get in without clinching the division? It could, but what if they fall a game short of the wild card?

  • B/R Ticket Guide

We rely on the computer so much that it's become clear that most of America would be fine with the current results. So if we stick with the current plan of attack that has been used in the NFL for a long time, here's how the postseason would look if it started today.

AFC Postseason: Titans, Steelers, Jets & Broncos would be in with Miami and Baltimore (Better Division Record) claiming the Wild Card

NFC Postseason: Giants, Panthers, & Cardinals would be in as Division Winners. However, Packers and Bears would have one more game to determine winner of NFC North due to same division record. As for wild card, Cowboys and Buccaneers would get the empty slots.

Sounds complicated right? Well imagine when the BCS gets involved. There's the SOS (Strength of Schedule), Division Record, Conference Record, Hair Color, Mother's Maiden Name, Astrological Sign...I think you get the point. If we were to look at this from the BCS perspective, here's how we would see the Top 10 BCS NFL teams:

1) Tennessee Titans (10-0, 7-0 AFC, 4-0 AFC South)

2) New York Giants (9-1, 6-0 NFC, 3-0 NFC East)

3) Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3, 7-1 AFC, 4-0 AFC North)

4) Carolina Panthers (8-2, 5-2 NFC, 2-1 NFC South)

5) Arizona Cardinals (7-3, 5-2 NFC, 4-0 NFC West)

6) New York Jets (7-3, 5-3 AFC, 3-1 AFC East)

7) Denver Broncos (6-4, 3-4 AFC, 2-1 AFC West)

8) Green Bay Packers (5-5, 4-4 NFC, 3-1 NFC North)

9) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3, 6-2 NFC, 2-1 NFC South)

10) Chicago Bears (5-5, 4-4 NFC, 3-1 NFC North)

Let's hope that this little experiment doesn't last long. This formula is way too damn complicated for even my sober side to figure out. The BCS is already a giant clusterfuck in the college ranks. But do you realize how many teams would get screwed out of a possible opportunity at the NFL Playoffs? Hopefully Sunday, this picture will become a little clearer.

But if the BCS was determining all sports postseasons, we'd be royally screwed.

Good thing this is a fantasy that will never come true. And now...you can wake up and return to your regularly scheduled team/writer bashing.

  1. You mean there is now actually a reason to watch a NFL regular season game? You mean I won't already know who most of the playoff teams are going to be in August already? You mean I'm going to have to stop playing golf on Sunday afternoons? You mean I'm going to be a prisoner in my own home from September through December on both Saturdays AND Sundays? Yeah, that's terrible.

  2. Of course, how cliche' , Lou has commented. Lou, the Dolphins and Ravens will be playoff teams as will the Cardinals and Falcons. Of course, my Broncos were underrated and the Chargers were overrated. Judging by what happened last season, the Broncos would have no chance. A playoff's coming to college football. Lou like it or not.

  3. Just for clarification, in your fantasy article, is the BCS determining the NFL playoffs or just determining the SuperBowl (i.e. Nat. Championship Game)?

If is just a matter of ranking the playoff teams then isn't it just an issue of the BCS system re-seeding which teams make it into the playoffs vs. the traditional divisional winners plus 2 wild card teams.

Also, shouldn't you have done the Top 12 BCS teams for a direct comparison with the conventional 12 teams that make it?

Wouldn't teams with better winning records actually make it in vs teams that win their division despite a mediocre record-

And how did you rank Green Bay and Chicago (both 5-5 teams) over teams like Indianapolis, Baltimore, Miami, Washington, Atlanta (who are all 6-4) in your "theoretical BCS rankings". Maybe you are saying that GB and Chicago have slightly tougher schedules but with only ten games I think the computers and the voters would give the edge two one of those 6-4 teams.

After your article I may be more inclined to have a BCS system re-read the teams in the NFL (still keep the playoff system though obviously). Just like College Football should have a playoff system (which would be seeded by the BCS system)!

    1. It's called humor Brian. Live a little and enjoy the irony in the article. You don't have to spend every day analyzing to be considered a serious article.

    2. I hate it when I miss that little marker saying its a humor article. I see that your a gator fan. I am a Red Raider. Perhaps we will be seeing each other in the Championship game to be determined by the BCS. Good luck agaisnt Alabama!

  4. I'm with Brian on this one. The idea's so ludicrous that it's funny and brilliant! Unfortunately, the execution wasn't too great. It would've been a great article had you taken it to the next level by tying it closer to reality. I mean no disrespect, I just think Brian has an excellent point.

Saying its "only humor" is an attempt to elevate the work above legit criticism.

A BCS system actually brings up a good point in that a lot of these mediocre division leaders wouldn't make the playoffs. For instance, maybe the entire NFC East makes it in and no one from the NFC North.

    You had something there.

  5. Let's see........
Last year had two teams with 2 loses that played in the title Game!

Wait...........Wasn't there an undefeated team? Am i Missing something here?
Guess not..........The BCS is a great system! Just don't go undefeated and you'll get into the title game.

Texas vs Alabama in title game!
Alabama Beats F Stays at #1
OU beats Texas Tech puts Texas at #2.

If your saying OU is better than Texas you don't know football! Remember Texas beat OU!
So if OU beats Texas Tech, OU still can't jump over Texas! If they do then yes the bcs is full
    of S@#$!

  6. We don't really rely on the computer for that much. Last I checked, the computers were only 1/3 of the BCS rankings, so the humans are more responsible for screwing things up than the computers.
