Boxing, Editorial

Just recently, there was an article by ESPN; discussing the fact that boxing is become too expensive of a sport to follow. The article was saying that fights are becoming too expensive, and following the sport a real fan’s way, is not worth it. They suggest that you need to cram your house full of people in order for an average Joe to be able to afford a PPV.

While I do agree that PPV fights are not cheap, I would like to argue this subject a little bit.

First of all, I would like to stress the fact that boxing has to be one of the cheapest sports to follow. People who watch football, basketball, baseball, e.t.c. have a lot more seduction from those sports. There are always games going on for any of those events, always things to buy (jerseys, shoes, gear, fan memorabilia).

Going to those games is not any cheaper than ordering PPV fights. Sure, there are virtually no PPVs for those other sports, but there is more way to spend money on the anyways.

In boxing, there are tons of free fights. As the matter of fact, 95% of the fights are indeed free. Merchandise is very limited as well. So an average boxing fan should not have too many luring opportunities to spend his or her money.

Another thing is that it is getting more expensive to promote. We get a lot more for out money then before. The pre-fight documentaries, the 24/7 shows (which by the way are pretty interesting, which I’m sure cost a decent amount to film and play). Advertising time, efforts, press-conferences with a bunch of stuff to give away: all that costs money.

I’m not defending anyone, I am just saying that in my opinion, boxing is one of the least expensive sports to be a fan of!

Thank You

  1. I agree with you that boxing isn't as expensive as a lot of sports. You need to remember that Football blacks out games that don't sell out; there are Thursday night games you can only watch if you have NFL ticket or NFL network. There's MLB ticket and NBA ticket and Hockey Thicket, and they all cost a pretty penny to be able to get those packages to watch the games. But if you’re a boxing fan you can watch fight nights on ESPN weekly, and Versus, and big fights on Showtime and HBO with out getting PPV.
