Many people have given up the idea of Erik Bedard becoming an ace in Seattle. I have yet to give up hope because of two words: Andy Pettite. Pettite, a fellow lefty, and Bedard had very similar 2004 and 2008 seasons, respectively.

In 2004, Pettite was signed by the Houston Astros, a new town, just like Bedard. He went 6-4 with a 3.90 ERA with the Astros. Bedard went 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 2008. They were both signed for the same reason

In 2005, Pettite went 17-9 with a 2.16 ERA. The Astros made it to the playoffs and even played the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. In 2009, Bedard can very easily do those same things.

I am encouraging all of you not to give up hope; I'm sure that he will be putting in some extra training this offseason and maybe, just maybe, the Seattle Mariners can play in the World Series in 2009.

  1. Comparing Bedard and PETTITTE (two ts not one) just because they are both lefties and had similar 2004 and 2008 seasons is just like comparing an apple and a banana just because they are both fruit. First off it is false to compare these players because in 2004 Pettitte was 31 years old and had 9 seasons of experience while Bedard will be around the same age at 30 next season, but will only have about 5 full seasons of experience. In this case experience is a bigger factor than age. I dont disagree with you on the fact that Bedard will have a better 2009 season than last, i just dont think that even if Bedard wins the 2009 Cy Young award, making the statement that they could go to the world series is a bit farfetched. The current plan the team is on isnt even thinking about the world series next season, more like 2010 at the earliest but realistically 2011 or later. The offense they are going to put up next season will be dismal and the majority of their best players are going to be seasoning their skills in the minors. The Mariners will have their chance to compete in the future, but the only way it will depend on Bedards performance this season is who they can trade him for at the deadline.

  2. "the majority of their best players are going to be seasoning their skills in the minors". How the heck did you ever come up with that? In September they had many players show off their future stuff such as Yuniesky Betancourt. Mike Morse was injured all last season after he batted .492 in spring training. The Mariners Suffered plenty of injuries including J.J. Putz, Eric Bedard, Willie Bloomquist, Mike Morse and Felix Hernandez. Bedard had a good era and strikeout numbers for what he played, he was injured for thirty games which is about 6 starts. so that would be a pace of 10-6. Not bad considering the injured offense behind him.
