CNNSI and other sources reported late last night that the trade of Zach Randolph to the L.A. Clippers has yet to be completed.
It appears from the articles that:
- At issue is an unspecified heart condition that Cuttino Mobley may have been playing with for several years.
- Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy has said that Mobley hasn't suffered any ill effects from the condition.
- The Knicks really don't care if Mobley doesn't play (for obvious reasons).
- A few years ago, New York traded for Eddy Curry, who had a more serious heart problem.
- B/R Ticket Guide
- The Knicks have until 6:30 p.m. E.S.T. to approve the deal if they decide to take Mobley anyway.
Of course, the most important issue is Mobley's health. It seems, however, that he has played and stayed healthy despite the condition, and has not shown any further problems resulting from it.
From a trade perspective, it is speculated that New York is trying to pry an extra asset (such as a draft pick) from the Clippers in compensation. However, L.A., which recently dropped to 2-12, is not likely to want to give up any.
Meanwhile, the Knicks are short-handed without Randolph and Collins, while the Clippers are short Mobley and Tim Thomas. None of the four players involved in the proposed trade are allowed to practice or play until the swap is finalized.
UPDATE: The trade has been finalized: Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins to the Clippers for cap space, err - Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. No draft picks or cash were added to the deal.
