According to mmafighting.com, Eddie Alvarez is set to fight on Jan. 23, 2009, in Atlantic City, New Jersey at Extreme Challenge.

Alvarez, who was originally set to fight Nick Diaz for the Elite XC lightweight title, now no longer has the option due to the promotion going bankrupt.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

Alvarez has made a name for himself this year; he was looking to be a favorite to win the Dream lightweight grand prix after defeating Joachim Hansen and Tatsuya Kawajiri in the same year. However, due to a cut over his right eye, he was replaced by Joachim Hansen in the finals. Hansen later went on to win the whole tournament.

Alvarez was the former welterweight title holder at the now-dead organization bodog fight. He has only lost one fight in his 16-fight professional career, losing his title to Nick Thompson

  1. Would you like to see Alvarez in the UFC - fighting agaisnt guys like Sherk, Florian, and BJ. Or, do you think he is better off being a free agent in Dream & others...

    1. Well I am a big fan of the Dream and others bcs you get to fight all over the world and I enjoy the tournaments also fighters are not held down to ridiculous contract constrictions. Of course right now the UFC's lightweight division is really blowing up with some very good fighters and a number of top 10 talents and Alvarez I believe would be a good addition to that division. He would certainly gather a big U.S. fan base if he fought there. But right now I think it is important he fight outside of the UFC bcs he has oppurtunities to fight guys like Hansen, Gomi, Diaz, Ishida, Sakurai, and Aoki who I think are all very strong compeition at lightweight and if faced against some of the UFC lightweights I believe could do very well, with the exception of Aoki who I think pinned against the fence could have some problems. So finally after this long paragraph I would say Alvarez should stay out of the UFC unless promised an immediate title shot against BJ Penn bcs the amount of time it would take him to earn the right for a title shot in the UFC he could have already gathered titles in other organizations.

  2. PUT HIM IN WITH EDGAR AND SEE IF HE BELONGS IN THE UFC. THIS WILL TEST HIS SKILL. WHO KNOWS HE MIGHT WIN AND THEN YOU CAN PUT HIM IN THE SHERK/PENN CLASS.
