Who's on First? Seattle Mariners Next First Baseman?

The Mariners had a disastrous 2008 season, plagued with injuries and problems behind the plate and at first base. They released Jose Vidro and Richie Sexson last season so Miguel Cairo had plenty of playing time.

My personal preference would be to move Mike Morse to first base, and then you don't have to sign Kevin Millar, Nomar Garciaparra, Lyle Overbay, or Jason Giambi. Then, the Mariners wouldn't have such a clogged outfield. With the possible departure of Raul Ibanez, Miguel Cairo, and Willie Bloomquist, the Mariners would have an extra $8 million to spend.

The Mariners could spend that money on a first baseman, they could get any first baseman on the market who's name is not Mark Teixeira. If they were to trade Ichiro to a team for prospects, that means the Mariners would have over $20 million to spend on players. They could sign Mark Teixeira with that money.

More realistically the Mariners could easily sign Kevin Millar or Lyle Overbay. Both would be good fits for Seattle and it wouldn't blow their budget.

  1. Trade Ichiro? Yeah that is a great idea. Lets trade one of a few guys most people actually come to see the Mariners play in Safeco. Personally I don't think they will but if he does, I hope he goes to a team that can get him a World Series ring. You know for all the things he has done for the M's organization, it is still mind boggling that people want to believe they should let Ichiro go. They lost over 100 games last season. What do you think an Ichiro less season is going to look like? I'll tell you what and it is one of the terms that I hate in sports. Rebuilding. So trade him that way I can go root for him on another team.

  2. lets look at somethings here, ichiro is 35, he hit .310 this season. he stole 43 bases. He is getting old and old fast. next year he probably won't even hit .300 andwon't come near 40 bases swiped. With age comes the thought of retirement. Jose Lopez is a beter hitter than ichiro. Raul is better than Ichiro. Who cares if people come to safeco, if we are winning the west people will come. platoon halman, wilson and reed. put morse at first. get a new catcher and we have a good team.

lets get prospects while we still can. trade him to the Yankees or Cubs. I was there when he broke the single season hit record, we Need to trade him.

They Lost 101 games yes, if they would have traded ichiro to the cubs for reed johnson, dereck lee and Josh Kroeger we would have only lost about 85.

  3. Hya, Ben! Lets face it; the M's aren't getting Tex. There isn't enough money in this organization, and I do not believe Tex has expressed interest in being in Seattle. However, I agree something needs to be done with Ichiro in regards to him no longer being in Seattle. Anyway, M's fans come to see the oponent of the Mariners, not the M's themselves. Ichiro's twenty million or so could be spent on some big name prospects.
    Cubbies won't trade Lee!!!!!!

    1. i don't want Mark Texiera. although they could afford him. do you even go to m's games?

  4. I gotta agree with you on this one, and if it could happen, I could maybe see the Cubs as a trading partner. As good as he is, we dont want Lee, we are trying to get younger and Lee would be good if we were aiming to contend. Instead lets look at the reason why the Cubs would trade Lee, Micah Hopppaiur(sp?). He had an impressive season in the minors last year, and would fit perfectly for the M's because of their needs at first. The Yankees overhype their prospects, and Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy look pretty iffy after last season.
Lets follow the path of the Giants, they seem to have a bright future after stepping out of the shadow of Bonds.

    1. Michah hoffpauir is i belive 29, too old. the moral of the story is we need to trade ichiro.

  5. I go to m's games. I went to root for the Yankees!!!!!!!!!! (and see the Mariner Moose)

  6. ya, most people go to see the M's, even this season. is this shanan from school?

  7. We all know we need to trade Ichiro, but we just proved that the Cubs and the Yankees are not the answer. If we trade Ichiro just for the sake of getting rid of him, we are not going to come close to the amount of talent we could bring in if we are patient.

  8. dodgers are another answer. the cardinals could also work.
