Anthony Smith has to be one of the dumbest players I have seen. Last season, before the game versus the undefeated Patriots, Anthony Smith decided to guarantee a win. The Pats obviously used the statement as bulletin-board material, and he was later torched for two long touchdown passes. He never started again.
Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that Anthony Smith has done it again.

His quote:
"If they ask me again, I'll say the same thing," he told the Indiana Gazette after the game Thursday night.
"We're the No. 1 defense. If we play like we've been playing, and our offense comes around and has a good game, and we're clicking on all cylinders, we're going to win the game."
Can someone please tell this fool to shut up? He is a backup safety, with tons of potential yet very little production. He has barely contributed to the defense and thus, has NO business running his mouth. Six tackles this season, six tackles!
Trash talking in the media brings no benefit. There is no reason to get the opposition fired up more than they already are. Especially a proud and successful franchise like the Pats. They will use it to their advantage.
Give it a rest, Anthony.

Hey Justin, lighten up clown. He is exactly right that if the league's number one defense shows up and the offense comes through, they should win the game. How is that trash talk? Try spending more time watching football and less trying to be a big shot and you might have a chance at this.

Funny, Eric. The point is that he did the same thing last year, only to get torched repeatedly. The entire team told him to shut up last year, and he did nothing to listen. Perhaps if he would spend some time listening, he would make it to the field a bit more. There is no sense in drawing attention to yourself, or your team. Let sleeping dogs lie they say. Especially when you have lost 9 of the last 10 meetings.

He was just saying if they play up to their full potential they'll win. Not exactly the "guarantee" he gave last year. The quote clearly says, "If we play like we've been playing, and our offense comes around and has a good game, and we're clicking on all cylinders, we're going to win the game." That's a legitimate point to make and should actually encourage the team.

Charlie, you are correct. He did stop short of last year. And he SHOULD think they will win. My point is that there is no reason to verbalize your thoughts like this. It does nothing but provoke and give artificial motivation to the other team. The Steelers know they should win, they think they will win, but nobody else feels the need to say that. And there are about 25 better players on the team who could speak up, yet choose not to.

I'm with you Justin, I hate when players guarantee things that they can't back up, like Smith last year. It's not like when Joey Porter would guarantee something and he could follow his guarantee with great play. Anthony Smith just cannot and does not play well enough right now to talk any trash about anybody or anything.

Thank you, Eddie. You made my point. If it were a starter, a difference maker, an impact player, you can deal with it. I didn't crucify him last year for the statement. But after the statement, he played horribly and was the single biggest reason they lost. Shut up and play "rook" is what they usually tell the rookies. Don't speak until you prove something. He is in his third year and hasn't proven a thing, other than he can get beaten deep.

Why haven't the Steelers cut this guy? Seriously, why? The Steelers are the better team this time around. Why give the Patriots something to rally around? Just take the high road and win the game...

A lack of depth at the position is why he is still around. The same goes with Tyrone Carter, but at least he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't continually make stupid mistakes. They need to upgrade the depth at safety. They apparently like Ryan Mundy but he was hurt at the end of training camp and is currently on the practice squad. Hopefully this is the last year of dealing with him.
