Bizarre. The nation's leading scorer, at 35 PPG going in, was held scoreless the other night against Loyola (Md.)
When I looked at the score on my phone when I was in the car heading home from the Detroit airport, I took a quick peek at the box score. I noticed Stephen Curry was on the bench and had 0 points on 0-3 shooting.
I thought two things: Either he was hurt, or Coach Bob McKillop was giving him a much-needed rest against an unworthy opponent, as the Cats were playing their second game in consecutive nights.
I was hoping it was a game off, obviously because I don't want him hurt, but also because he will eventually need them so that it's certain he's fresh for the tournament run.

I was wrong.
Loyola's coach wanted to "contain" the impossible, so he proceeded to put two guys on him the entire game. They weren't just on him, though—they were draping him. Curry could barely get the ball, let alone get a shot off to score. He shot three times in 32 minutes!
Early in the game, once Curry realized what was happening, he would run to the corner and stand there and let his teammates take on Loyola 4-3. Davidson may not have the deepest team in the nation, but it's safe to say they are good enough, with Bob drawing up the plays, to beat others when they have a man advantage. They ended up winning by 30.
The quote after the game by the Coach of Loyola (Md.) was priceless, as all he cared about was making sure Stephen Curry didn't get his patented 30 points, or any points, for that matter.
"We had to play against an NBA player tonight. Anybody else ever hold him scoreless? I’m a history major. They’re going to remember that we held him scoreless or we lost by 30?”
And that, my friends, is why Jimmy Patsos is the head coach at Loyola (Md.) Go Cats.

Bob,
Loved your headline! Keep watching Steph. He's just getting started on his season. The other players are getting better every game. I doubt any other team will attempt putting Baby in a corner in quite the way Patsos did. Steph showed such class in the way he handled it. GO CATS!

Wouldn't happen to be a fellow Davidson alum/student would you? I'm interested to see how good this team can be this year, although Steph will tire if he has to run around and create his own shots like he has so much during the first few games (minus the Loyola game, ha!)

My daughter is a fellow student with Steph and one of his best friends. She was on his hall freshman year before he was famous. Thats he great thing about Davidson-the students and athletes completely mix it up, unlike my experience at UVA when Sampras and Lamp were playing. You didn't actually KNOW any basketball players- they were completely separated from the student body. I think Steph will be up to the task, especially with Lovedale coming on strong and great defense from Max. If Bryant can get some consistency with his 3 shooting and good support from the bench with Allison and young Mckillop I think they are going to be formidable. They only lost to Oklahoma by 4 and that was with everyone being cold as ice and Steph on the bench 7 or 8 minutes in the first half. They only shot 35 % that game which is very low for them. Look for a good game and hopefully an upset against NC State this weekend! I think you will see them get stronger through the season and well positioned for March. Plus they are just so much damn fun to watch. GO CATS!

Okay. I graduated in '08 with J-Rich and Thomas.
Davidson is a great place to say the least, and obviously it makes it more fun to watch their teams when you have an allegiance to the place.
I agree with you on all points.

Should have known you were a Wildcat...so I don't have to explain anything to you about Davidson culture. I will be there in Charlotte on Saturday for the NC State game so look for my post game account...
