One of my favorite writers to read is ESPN Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber, the lady responsible for contributing monthly columns that are run without a filter and intended to help provide an outsider's view and suggestions for ESPN's journalistic standards.
But because her section is a bit buried on the front page of ESPN.com, it becomes easier to overlook her great efforts. As we round the bend on her fun two-year tenure in the role, I took a look at her last three columns today and wanted to pass them along if for no other reason than I'm still in a food coma and don't feel like writing much today!
-October - The See-All, Tell-All Media: Schreiber's
October effort centered on how ESPN handled Titans QB Vince Young during the injury/benching/misreported suicidal thoughts fiasco and what role the network played in reporting on the story. Give it to Vince Doria, ESPN senior VP and director of news, and others in answering her questions honestly. You might not like what they say, but at least they're not shying away from the firing line, which is refreshing.
-November - No Margin On Mistakes: Finally,
this month's Schreiber post cover the Lou Holtz Hitler comment and how it was dealt with, ESPN's handling of political figures in the stories they ran and their response to the wide criticism of their non-reporting of the Brett Favre/Detroit Lions game-planning rumor that Fox Sports' Jay Glazer broke. Really good column here that takes on some hot-button topics in the blogosphere.
Have a great holiday weekend!
