Boxing, Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Editorial

This article is not a prediction. It’s not a dissection of either fighter’s skills or abilities. This article is my opinion on what the outcome of this fight means for boxing. This fight will decide a lot, including both fighters’ future, the future of boxing as a sport, and the future of boxing as an entertainment stable.

If Oscar Wins
Well, what that would mean primarily, is another fight. He will probably target another good fighter to make money. Maybe he will ask Mayweather to fight him (hopefully not), maybe even Hatton. There is no one else for him to fight. So we would be in for another 24/7 HBO session, along with great hype-up for the fight.

Another thing that we will keep if Oscar wins is the entertainment side of boxing. Oscar knows how to pick fights, and know how to make them bigger than life itself. Basically speaking, we will see more of boxing’s Golden Boy. But there are things that we will lose. We will lose hope in Boxing (Manny).

We will lose some excitement, and boxing as a sport will take a huge hit from as a sport overall. Great fighters will be diminished, and critics will say that it’s all out fault (why set up a fight with such size difference).

If Pacman Wins
Boxing just might be saved. He is not only the hope of the Philippines, but is also the hope of the hardcore boxing fans. He is the pound for pound king, and if he wins this fight, it opens a lot of windows for a lot of different fights. We all know I am talking about a very probable fight against Mayweather.

Both fighters will want that fight, because it will break all records, and be a great action filled fight. So that’s one good reason to keep Manny on top. Another good thing about the win, would be the fact that the authenticity of boxing as a sport will be kept and increased. What I mean by that, is the fact that the “better/younger/faster p4p” boxer beats the bigger guy.

Critics will like that, and will call him the next great thing for boxing. What I feel we will lose, is the “Golden Boy charm.” Boxing needs a great fighter, who is also a charmer and a fun promoter. Sometimes too much seriousness can become boring, and lead to loss of fans and general interest.

Who I Think Will Win
Oscar will destroy Manny. Size, reach, experience.

Who I Want To Win
Manny, because I want to see Mayweather come out of the hiding.
