UFC 137 Results: Roy Nelson Sends Mirko Cro Cop into Retirement on Sour Note

Austin GreenCorrespondent IOctober 29, 2011

Mixed martial arts legend Mirko Cro Cop announced his retirement after his TKO loss to Roy Nelson, an unfitting end to an excellent career.

Cro Cop was in control early, but ate a couple of brutal punches that clearly had him dazed. Eventually, Nelson got on top of him and pummeled his face in, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

The was Cro Cop's third consecutive loss, which is a sad way for one of the sport's best to go out. His last victory was in June 2010, when he submitted Pat Barry with a rear-naked choke.

After that fight, it was downhill for Cro Cop. He was knocked out by a Frank Mir knee in his next fight, then by a Brendan Schaub punch half a year later.

The 37-year-old Croatian retires with a record of 27-10-2. In 2006, Cro Cop was seen as perhaps the most dangerous striker in the heavyweight division.

His devastating power was exhibited when he knocked out Wanderlei Silva with a head kick, which earned him Sherdog's 2006 Knockout of the Year award.

Cro Cop was sent into retirement on a sour note, but it doesn't overshadow the great career he had. Mixed martial arts needs more fighters like Mirko Cro Cop.
