  1. well that could've went better.

    ouch.

this wasn't the florida team that played ole miss. gotta give credit where credit is due, fla not LSU was the top 3 team tonight. this was reminiscient of the 06 game. nothing was working for LSU. lee was inconsistent and florida speed is unparalleled by anyone in the country even USC.

i knew we'd pick up a loss in the next two weeks i just didn't know if it'd be to fla or sc. i hope we don't drop two in a row with uga coming after that.

well, carolina got the W. i hope they take the tigers lightly next week although i'm sure SOS won't let that happen.

but this was a statement game for florida. that statement apparently is "don't count us out for the NC just yet."

  2. Actually, I'm not sure I phrased the part about that last example in the usage note properly, but another way to put it what I've been trying to say is that "none" is like saying something about "all" but making it negative. At least, that's how it is widely used. "All of those mistakes aren't particularly damaging."

Alright, anyway, the point is that I see your point and if I come across another of your articles I'll try to keep your preference in mind, should you maintain it. I just want to make sure we're on the same page.

  3. Hey there again,

Let me preface by stressing what I should have last time (though I did say it) in that both forms are acceptable, and I encourage you to change it back if it bothers you. As an editor I find it much, much easier to treat it as exclusively plural because there is basically one instance in which the plural form isn't best, whereas there are a few instances in which the singular isn't best (or, at least, is much more awkward).

While I believe both forms are always acceptable even when one is sometimes better, this is not really one of those situations, so it comes down to preference. To say "none of those mistakes" is accounting for *each* mistake, so, to put it another way, we can say "none of *them* were particularly damaging." I also believe treating it as a plural is more common in the vernacular, but that may depend on where you live.

Either way, here is a usage note from dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/none):

**Since none has the meanings “not one” and “not any,” some insist that it always be treated as a singular and be followed by a singular verb: The rescue party searched for survivors, but none was found. However, none has been used with both singular and plural verbs since the 9th century. When the sense is “not any persons or things” (as in the example above), the plural is more common: … none were found. Only when none is clearly intended to mean “not one” or “not any” is it followed by a singular verb: Of all my articles, none has received more acclaim than my latest one.**

The final example there is saying "*Of* all of them," so it's referring to one article when it mentions "the latest *one.*" If it were referring to all of his articles, I would interpret it to require a plural verb.

Again, you may agree to disagree, but I believe these are good reasons to treat "none" as a plural except in the aforementioned example.

Thanks for the grammar discussion; I had been operating more on instinct when it came to this and it was interesting to read about it and hear your take,

    -Tim

  4. man, i don't know whether to be flattered or pissed that the cfn prediction to the UF LSU game is close to ours.

  5. I hear ya Tim—one of the features I'm pushing for us to build sooner rather than later is a comprehensive staff section where you'd be able to see photos/profiles of everyone who works here and our antics in the office...

I'll keep fighting the good fight, glad to see you think it'd be cool—take er easy.

  6. hey i'm trying to do something kind of a joint preview/prediction thing with wunderlich for the florida game. he seems on board. i was wondering if you'd be my dance partner for the carolina game??

you can read my ramblings on wunderlich's profile, but i'd like to have an ongoing series and think it'd be a great thing for the site if others picked up on it.

  7. Tim, I was recently asked to be the Community Leader for Georgia Football. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, noticed that you like coffee..... Check this out. Bluesmokecoffee.com

Located in Rome Ga. He roast the beans when you order them and ships to your door. Best coffee I've ever had..... He does have some retail spots that sell it. Not sure if any are in SC... but check it out.

    Thanks -

  8. Tim, we have a new Gamecock who joined B/R today. His name is Fred Wise. You might want to fill him in on your great articles. May be our only chance to save him before the Tigers start writing again and scare him off !

  9. i wish i could sleep 9 hrs. the wife just hit the "i have to pee every two hours" phase. she never gets more than 3 hours of sleep in a row. i guess this is like training us or something.

the funny thing is that it was center brett helms' foot that really caused the blow.

sorry i was just kinda playing off of pete fiutak's column today when he really played the hatch injury as a serious thing and chided mike patrick for saying "he was seeing stars and nothing else".

i didn't think it was that big a deal, but then i thought well maybe i shouldn't joke about it.

dang you been churning out articles...i see... now i gotta go read 'em.

thanks for the vote, long live the 'dores!!!!!! bowl bound baby!!!!!

  10. Tim,

Enjoying your articles as always. Wanted to talk with you quickly about a Stephen Garcia piece I'm working on.

I'd love it if you would shoot me a message: harkinsa@gmail.com

  11. i think you were making a joke about stealing the 2:30 game. that's b/c you know no LSU fan ever wants a 2:30 game over a night game, home or away. but mostly home.

yeah early november is coming up quick. we just did two baby classes this week (kinda like a hospital and labor prep course). i was just fine not knowing what an episiomity was.

yeah before the baby kicking was cute. now it's growing most movements are either tolerable or painful. then again, this is my baby, and i'm not a small guy.

i think we lose to AU.

  12. Tin-

You are talking to a fan whose team lost to Stanford. Been there. It's awful.

And the worst part is, you may win the next ten games and that freaking loss to a smart school ruins your season. I know how it feels. It's best to just laugh at it. I have been laughing about Stanford for almost a year. Damn them!

  13. yeah, their D looks awesome in spots. i think emotions and frustration got the best of munnerlyn.
vandy also did a great job with some of their play calls and execution. i really thought that time they got to the two and the cocks held them to a FG, i thought it would be over after that. gotta give the 'dores some credit.

the SC WR's look great when the ball actually gets to them. i guess that's something they'll have in common with my team.

  14. i'd like to point out, before it all falls apart, that my air tight locks are 2-0, thanks to horrible special teams and a punchless offense from the cocks.

i went to a friend's house who had power and cable and watched the last 3 qtr's.

i had to tell someone, so i could feel special before going 2-10.

  15. you're no fun.

game was hot. app st wore all black......rookies.

it was about what i expected. i said LSU would put up 41, but i was a little off in my ASU score (11pts) i guess i gave them too much credit.

armanti edwards was good but he had nothing all day. 31-0 at half and then miles got the bench some work. D looked good. QB will be a learning process. running game was sharp, they hardly used trindon holliday at all. that surprised me a little.

special teams still needs some work. we can't kickoff past the 20 (colt david was held out for injury) and the punting was frickin awful.

all in all, not bad for a 10 am game.

getting out the house but staying at my wife's cousin still in red stick to ride it out. they're a little less likely to lose power. don't want a 7 mos pregnant wife with no air cond. they're saying even with winds hitting 120 mph and over, winds will be down to 50-60 mph with gusts up to 80 in baton rouge.

hoping and praying all is well for those in N.O. my family there got out. mom's in chicago with my aunt. dad took the grandparents to memphis. we may still lose power except for what a generator runs so i might be MIA for a couple days.

i'll be back as soon as i can. peace!
