Ellen's Bio

Thirtysomething Latin tutor and resident of the ivory tower who's gotten sucked into the wonders of baseball.

Sports Experience: Minimal. I grew up down the road from Dallas Green, but had no idea who he was until our teensy town held a victory parade for him in 1980. I was dragged uncomprehending to an Orioles World Series game in the late 70s, but it was snowed out. My mother likes to remind me what I said trying to escape the crush of cold, dirty, loud Memorial Stadium: I never wanted to go to "a stupid baseball game" again. My hatred of pro sports was made complete by family season tickets to the Baltimore Colts in their last dismal years before they left the city.

25+ years later on the opposite coast, I found myself chafing at the "stupid baseball game" that kept interrupting my favorite news station. Then, in spite of myself, I began listening. The announcer was a bard in the tradition of Homer, who could transform battle scenes -- ahem, baseball -- into epic, mundane details into poetry, and happenings of 50 years ago into soul-moving history.

"The Voice."

Vin Scully.

Since I'm a resident of Orange County, it took me a few years to attend my first game. But thanks to Vin, I'm a convert to baseball and Dodger Blue. I think the misery of the '05 season gives me the right to claim I've graduated from "fairweather fan" to True Blue.

As for my neighbors the Angels, I've got no beef with them, apart from the folly of the DH and fuzzy geography. (If we're in LA, why does it take me 2+ hours and 50 miles to reach Dodger Stadium?) But I've never attended a game at nearby Angel Stadium unless one of the teams there is wearing Dodger Blue.
