Good evening Martin: Arnie & Jack sounds a good read I understand it is in the bookshops over here and I will certainly look forward to reading it. They are good friends but without doubt serious rivals.
It appears when Jack had finished his last design in Ireland. the helicopter pilot insisted on flying over The K Club, designed of course by Arnold Palmer Inc. The Golden Bear after viewing the course from the air remarked on landing: "Nice course and layout- I wonder if Arnie has seen it yet ?" !!!!

when looking at the ryder cup you can talk about missed cuts wins and money
the bottomline is none of those apply
in this competition
the americans are hungry theyre at home and they may just have a secret weapon...
native kentuckian kenny perry
hes motivated and the players can fed off that
the europeans are talented but they have a few unknowns on ths side of the pond namely soren hansen
the ryder cup is pressure filled we'll see if the europeans andle it
i like the us

I expect Europe to win based on them having more depth than the United States. The U.S. can not depend on players like J.B. Holmes, Chad Campbell, and Hunter Mahan. All of them have at least 7 missed cuts this year. You won't find those kind of stats on the European side. Justin Rose has missed 5 cuts on the PGA Tour this year, but he should not be confused with those players above. Arguably toward the bottom of the depth chart for Europe is Soren Hansen, and yet he has made 13 of 13 cuts on the European Tour and has 7 top 10s this year. The numbers for the top players on each side are very similar, so the edge must go to Europe as they have shown more consistency that is a necessity in this 3 day, match play format.
Having said that, the U.S. still has a strong group of top players like Mickelson, Furyk, Cink, Kim, and Leonard that should be expected to make things interesting. The problem for the U.S. is that Europe can counter with Garcia, Harrington, Stenson, and Westwood.
Obviously, playing in Kenny Perry's home state of Kentucky is a boost for the Americans. But Kenny Perry has cooled down recently so this might not be the advantage it could have been.
Ultimately, the U.S. will be forced to rely on players that are unreliable and inconsistent. The Americans could heat up and pull off the upset, but don't count on it.

Thanks Martin.
I'm going with the European side. I feel the American side is just too inexperienced.
That said, I'm unhappy with the European selection and the captaincy of Nick Faldo. He's managed to take a completely confident side and add a trojan horse. The Ian Poulter saga has split European golf and has therefore taken a grip within the camp.
Padraig Harrington is doing his bit publicly by backing Poulter and Faldo but the damage is done. If America can gel as a team like Europe have in previous years then anything can happen at Valhalla.
I'm anticipating a tight match. Being a Scot though, I couldn't back anyone but Europe. Even without Monty!

I will definitely participate. Let me know if you are ready to publish and I haven't posted my take yet. Thanks.

Hey Martin,
Thanks for including me in this roundtable. I must say that golf isn't one of the better sports I play, but I enjoy watching it sometimes and talking bout it.
As much as it hurts to say this, the USA doesn't look like its that serious of winning the Ryder Cup. It's bringing in alot of inexperienced rookies to face a European team full of veterans who have won this already. Things do not bode well, my fellow Americans.
I'm not saying that the USA won't win, I'm saying it's highly unlikely. However, this is golf, anything can happen. I think that the biggest players for the USA will be Phil, Furyk, and Kim. They're all pretty decent and I'm expecting them to do well. The problem with the USA though, is that not many of these guys play well together, unlike the Europeans who seem to do the same thing as a unit.
For the USA to win, they would have to pick players that have a bit more experience and play well together. I know alot of people think that Tiger being out is a good thing, but I'm not too sure. He would've helped the team a bit.
For now, all I can do is sit and watch the USA and Europe fight it out once again. I'm hoping that the USA will win, but as of right now, it's not looking that way.

Good to hear Martin,
I already kinda suggested thr roundtable to Thomas (Leemon) and Andrew (McNair) - I got carried away by the enthusiasm of the idea! - so it might be a good idea to speak to them as well...
Had thought of a few questions, but you seem to have everything under control! Will sort out my contribution asap.

do you have any specific dead line you would like me to abide?
i was also wondering sense there has been alot of talk about the fedex cup
and little about the race to dubai
i was wondering if maybe we can debate the merits of both
and weather o not it is a wise move for the euro tour
any thoughts?

Hi Martin,
I have been discussing the idea of a Ryder Cup Roundtable, and trying to create a Europe/US debate going. I was wondering if you wanted to get involved. As the golf section's community leader, it would only make sense I think!
Thanks,
Alex

Hey Martin, thanks for your kind words and I enjoyed your FedEx Cup article as well. I'll hold off on my final FedEx article so I don't steal your thunder.
As for freelancing-- I actually do very little freelance sportswriting. I've done small pieces for some local golf magazines, but basically all of my freelance work is in other fields.
The best advice I can give is to write, write, write-- and then when you're done that, write some more. That's how you'll improve your writing style, establish a reputation, and have samples to show to potential employers.
Also remember that print media is dying a slow but steady death, so try to familiarize yourself with multimedia as much as possible. Knowledge of HTML and podcasting will be essential skills in a few years.
Let me know of any other questions you have. I'm more than happy to answer.
