Chitwood is one of two men to be an assistant coach in all three major professional sports leagues (Karen Hughes is the other). He began his career with the 1962 New York Mets, helping to lead them to a 40-120 record. He then transitioned into the NBA with the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, helping them finish 9-73. Three years later, as assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs, he helped the expansion franchise finish a sturdy 0-14. Having accomplished all his goals in the professional sports realm, he segued into diverse industries such as film (as co-producer of the 1980 film “Heaven’s Gate”), finance (as head of the Arthur Andersen corporate oversight division) and real estate (as co-originator of innovative subprime mortgages). He lives in the Inland Empire.
