In honor of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay in East Bound and Down set to appear on HBO, I would like to remember Coach Mike Gundy's tirade over a newspaper article back in September 2007. If you forgot, here is the YouTube video of the infamous tirade.
After Coach Gundy's Oklahoma State Cowboys beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Gundy did not address the game. Instead, he flipped out about an article written by reporter Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman about then recently benched quarterback Bobby Reid.
After going on and on about Carlson's article being a bunch of lies and a work of fiction, he went refusing to answer any questions from any reporters, including Carlson, on what factual errors there actually were in the article.
Gundy refused to answer and instead said he would rather let it go but not after ripping Carlson about not knowing how difficult it is to console these young kids after mistakes.
"Let me tell you why I want to talk about this article. Three-fourths of this is inaccurate. Fiction. And this article embarrasses me to be involved with athletics.”
"Come after me! I'm a man! I'm 40!!!"
"Don’t write about a kid that does everything right; his heart is broken! And then say that the coaches said he was scared! That ain’t true!"
"You let us make that decision! That’s why I don’t read the newspaper!"
"That’s all I’ve got to say. It makes me want to puke."
These were just some of the many quotes offered up by Coach Gundy in the telling off of Carlson and the media.
Although many people, including those in sports broadcasting and college coaches around the nation, remain divided on this tirade, one thing remains certain. Coach Gundy was friggin' hilarious!
