Elite XC: Gary Shaw Should Be Arrested

Isaac NewmanContributor IJune 1, 2008

It's time someone said it. Gary Shaw should be arrested for what he's doing to MMA. Elite XC is a joke of company. It looks more like a company run by Vince McMahon. After watching last nights event, my blood is boiling.

To think that people who have never seen an MMA event before saw that event and thought they were seeing the real thing is heart breaking. What they watched was anything but Elite. With the out of shape, overweight fighters, the cheerleaders, the dancing fighters in sequence robes and the rappers, I thought I was watching the next wrestlemania. I wouldn't have been surprised to see the WWE writers in the back of the arena hard at work.

The first bout was pathetic. Both fighters looked like they had just walked out of a donut shop. And with all of the hay-makers being thrown, it looked more like a backyard brawl rather than a MMA fight.

The female fighters at least put on a good showing and performed rather well, but their star fighter couldn't even make weight. Not that it doesn't happen in other leagues, but it's not their star fighters missing fight weight. That just shows a lack of dedication and commitment. Something you shouldn't see from your elite fighter in that class.

Then there's the middle weight champion. I have a lot of respect for Robbie Lawler. He was a great fighter, but not anymore. Not to long ago he couldn't beat the 2nd rate fighters of the UFC, and now he's a title holder? Lawler belongs in someone's corner or behind a mic, not wearing a belt. It just goes to show the level of fighters they have in the "Elite" XC.

Finally there's the Kimbo Slice fight. How you could put either of those fighters on television, much less in a main event is beyond me. I'm not saying that Kimbo Slice couldn't be a decent fighter if he continues to train and develop new skills, but he's nowhere near ready right now. Not to long ago he was fighting ILLEGALLY in back yards, and on the  internet. And watching that fight it was evident. If he were fighting someone with half the skill of a Frank Mir, Tim Sylvia, or Randy Couture, he would have been, at the very least submitted in the first round. Instead he fought a third rate fighter who in my opinion was robbed.

The bad thing is that there are a lot of people who have never been exposed to a good MMA event that were watching last night. Those potintial new fans were told that they were watching the "Elite" in mixed martial arts. The plain and simple truth of the matter is that they were watching a circus. And Gary Shaw is laughing all the way to the bank while he puts a bruise in the name of the mixed martial arts community. He's making this sport look like the boxing of late.

So please, if there is any justice in this world, issue a warrant, arrest Gary Shaw, and throw away the key. But hey, what do I know? I'm just a real MMA fan. Maybe the public wants another WWE. What do you think?
