With a long summer ahead until the opening game against Virginia, I felt that I would take the time to delve deeply into the USC roster with position by position breakdowns. Today we look at Left Tackle.
Charles Brown, 6'6", 295, Redshirt Jr.
Brown was originally recruited as a tight end but quickly outgrew that position in terms of pure size. He was moved to tackle where he has continued to excel, providing excellent backup to previous starters. After earning playing time last year, it is obvious that Brown is a gifted athlete who excels in all aspects of the position.
Butch Lewis, 6'7", 300, Redshirt So.
Lewis was originally recruited as a defensive tackle, but upon arriving at USC it became clear that he would be a better tackle. Butch is a monster of a man who is an extremely effective blocker. He was held back this spring due to a lingering ankle injury, but after returning impressed greatly. He is expected to really push for a starting position at right tackle next season.
Tyron Smith, 6'6", 270, [Incoming Freshman]
In terms of potential, Tyron Smith has an extremely high upside. He is considered the most athletic and gifted tackle prospect signed since Tony Boselli, which speaks volumes. Smith is a long lean tackle who is expected to redshirt his freshman season in order to bulk up. If all projections are right, it won't be long until we see him on the field.
