You have to wonder why the media falls so in love with some athletes.
Is it because the jocks put on smiles and do interviews? Is it because they've overcome personal tragedies?
For my money, pure performance should be all that counts.
Which brings me to Brett Favre.
Didn't Favre win just ONE Super Bowl? And when he had a chance to win a second one the following year, didn't he choke against the Broncos?
What's more, didn't Favre throw six interceptions in a playoff game at St. Louis in 2001? SIX interceptions!
And still he was welcomed back to Green Bay the following season.
Had Kurt Warner—Favre's counterpart in the St. Louis game—thrown six picks, he would've been run out of town.
But Brett Favre gets away with it.

And there's the annual retirement saga. If a football player isn't sure he wants to go to war with his teammates, he shouldn't be out there. By waiting until training camp to make a decision, isn't Favre holding his team hostage?
You call that kind of a player a "team guy"?
I don't know what games the media and NFL fans are watching—but I do know that Favre has been lucky. He's avoided a lot of scrutiny. And undeservedly so.
Think about Warner, and Grossman, and all the benched QBs around the league.
I remember one game a few seasons ago. The Packers were playing Chicago. Favre overthrew a ball in the end zone, and it sailed beyond his receiver's grasp.
The commentators' reaction?
"What a great pass!"
That's how it goes in Green Bay, I guess: Win one Super Bowl and you become infallible.

As a side-bar to my article: Baseball fans and media alike like to say, "Barry Bonds should have retired after 1999 and wouldn't have approached the home run record." So my question is, where are those kinds of naysayers for Favre? I don't hear people saying, "Favre should have retired after '01 and not gone after Marino's record." Double standards, I see.

Brett has the most picks,but if you look at picks vs. number of passes thrown Brett does not averge any more picks then any other quaterback in NFL history except for payton and Brady. As matter of fact Jonny U. averaged twice as many picks per pass attempt as did Bart Starr.

And by the way, if you play the game long enough, like Brett, and have the all time games played record, you're bound to probably have some of the highest records, both good and bad, which he does. If Peyton plays that long, which he will, he will probably beat Brett's interception record. Period.

The fact of the matter is, the media and fans alike worship Favre, but again, look at his numbers and his play for the past several seasons. The man should have retired a long time ago. If he had played in Minnesota, Chicago, New York, or anywhere else, he would have long been released. I didn't know that Mr. Falcetta had written about Favre too, but I applaud him for that, as I can say that Favre is one of the most overrated of all time. I'm a life long bears fan and I can tell you that I would give ANYTHING to have a quarterback like Brett Favre. Since Favre took over that spot in '92 the Bears have had 23 starting quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Brett Favre has beat us more times than any other person has ever beat another team. Favre has his faults but he is an incredible player and I believe that a lot of his struggles have come from playing with bad teams. He once again has a good, not great, team around him and he looks as good as he ever has. KP says that if Green Bay loves him they should keep him and keep losing...last I checked the Packers are tied for the best record in the NFC at 7-1. I only wish my Bears had such a bad player for the last 15 years.

All of you naysayer are idiots. Say it 7-1. Yes, Favre wasn't great in 2004 and 2005 but then he didn't have much of a team to back him. Last year the Packers had a young time and rallied towards the end of the season. This year they have the youngest team in the NFL and they are winning. If you do some reading about Brett this season you will see that he has been very realistic about their and his performance-get real people.
The reason he is a legend is because of the way he plays the game, his records and his toughness. Beyond everything else he is a down to earth chilled guy. This is very refreshing especially with the tons of pompous arrogant overpaid spoilt players in the NFL.

I have never heard of the bleacher report. Is this intended to be a serious article? How can you write an article like this on a day where Favre led his team to another come from behind victory. He added another record by joining Brady and Manning as the only QB's in NFL history to beat every team. He is the only 3x MVP of the league! Not only does he have 3, but he won them consecutively!
Why would the media not love this guy. He is a role model for the NFL. Sure, he has made mistakes in his past with the addiction to painkillers and alcohol but, like a man, he has admitted those mistakes and sought help.
For those of you who say that Favre should have retired a couple years ago, keep this in mind. Look at the players that surrounded him throughout his career. He never had an Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Terrell Davis, etc. Favre always worked with what he had and he was the best at doing so. Yes, he had some talented players who made a few pro bowls but never an all-pro or hall of fame player. BTW: CAN YOU IMAGINE OUR OFFENSE THIS YEAR WITH RANDY MOSS!!!
The only reason he is receiving more recognition than before is because of all the records he is breaking and the fact that our team is doing so well. He is a huge part of our success this year. We are a good running game away from dominating the NFC. The youngest team in the NFL is only going to get better and the team should be left in good shape when Rodgers is ready to step in and receive the reign from Favre.
You cannot make the comparison of other shitty QB's getting benched because all of them are journeymen who have had more failure than success in the NFL. Favre is a first ballot HOF candidate who deserves everything that he has achieved. How can you say he is selfish for not coming out while he is banged up. He is a warrior who wants to be there for his team every single play! That is the true meaning of a "team player". Favre is our best chance at QB no matter how old he is. You can't just say Rodgers is young and needs experience. He gets that from taking snaps in practice and playing most of the pre-season games.
Talk all you want about Favre throwing interceptions. I would rather have a QB that has confidence in his WR to take that shot down the field or throw the ball into a tight spot and hope they make a play. If the DB makes a great play then so be it. It's just as good as a punt most of the time. He is the only QB who takes shots like this and that is why he is amazing! He has fun on the field and that makes people remember when they use to play football and have fun in the yard. I don't get that feeling when I watch any other QB now or ever.
Favre can play until he is 40 with success. He has not really lost any arm strength, accuracy, or tenaciousness. The only thing that has changed are the people around him.

As a GB fan (I grew up in WI watching and rooting for terrible Bart Star - coached teams), Brett Favre has been like ... I don't know...Gretzky to his Edmonton fans? Here's the deal...I happen to think Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time. But Brett is the greatest GB QB of all time, and that's damned good enough for me. It seems like a whole lot of other people think he is pretty special. He might not be the best ever, and he has played poorly at times in his career. I happened to think that he should have been benched when he was hurt (thumb) and not playing well. That's a coach's decision jerko. As you will see from my comments throughout this conversation, I disagree entirely with the premise of the article as much as the majority of anonymous flamers do. But why on earth do you people feel compelled to make comments like this just because you disagree with someone?
It's so much more effective to use logic in order to prove your point. All that a comment like this does is make you sound like a complete and utter fool. I look at New England now and wonder how many of those wins were legit. It's an absolute travesty to call Favre's performance in Super Bowl XXXII a "choke" my good man: he put up pretty damn good numbers (25 out of 42, 256, 3 touchdowns and 1 pick), especially when compared to Elway's (12 out of 22, 123 yards, 0 touchdowns and 1 pick).

Someone needs to alert Google as to the "newsworthy" substance of this garbage. I have no clue why it shows up under google news, as this is pure garbage written by a fool that obviously doesn't know anything about the game of football.
Brett Favre, like him or not, is going to go in to the NFL Hall Of Fame the moment he becomes eligible. He has 3 NFL MVP awards, holds the career NFL touchdown record, owns the most passing attempts record along with completions, is 2nd on the list of players that have started playing games with his streak that goes back to 1992.
While Brady is having an incredible year, he'll have to throw 30+ TD's for the remainder of his NFL career to catch Favre. Manning has a much better chance of taking this record away.
One day in the not so distant future we will see the decline of Indianapolis and New England. We'll see how Brady and Manning manage when they lose their offensive line and favorite targets.

Emotions aside, one of the greatest's testaments to Brett Favre is that he is idolized by almost every active NFL player, especially his opponents. Some have even suggested that he doesn't get hit that hard because opposing players have TOO MUCH respect for him. It is one thing to say that the press overhypes a player, but who knows the game more than the players on the field? Favre....40th 4th quarter comeback win (KC), over 50 300+ yard games, beat all 31 NFL teams, Most TD's on the road then any other QB in History, Owns nearly every passing record and only shy roughly 1500 yards from Marino's total yards (94 yards from 60,000....wow), ethusiastic, humble, and just an awesome presence on ANY field. Character/chemistry of team is half the battle, Brett brings that whether he plays well or not....and that makes him great. If I recall, Favre's #'s in the 2nd Super Bowl we as good as his 1st. The fact is that Darius Holland got run over the entire game by Terrell Davis. This writer obviously has a grudge, being from Green Bay it has been a pleasure to watch Brett Favre over the years, the good and the bad and the good by far outweighs the bad.
I may be a little bias being from Green Bay, this year has been more fun to watch than when they were expected to win.

At the end of the day Favre holds the record for wins, TDs, completions, attempts, interceptions, beating every NFL team once, and soon-to-be passing yards. He won a Super Bowl, appeared in two Super Bowls, and is the only 3-time league MVP.
Regarding his consecutive games streak, he wasn't Cal Ripken. Favre actually played in almost every game of his career in its entirety; he didn't play a quarter then retire to the bench ala Ripken just for a record. Further, and this is a fact, he's played some of the best games in his career the week after a severe injury.
Regarding him also throwing the most interceptions, it's true only when looking at it on the surface. He threw more passes than anyone therefore his interceptions will automatically be higher. Further, his TD to INT ratio is better than other all-time greats who are continually rated higher than him. If these other players threw for 427 TDs in their career they would have the following INT numbers: Montana 218, Marino 257, Elway 321, Aikman 365, Tarkenton 331, and Unitas 371 compared to Favre's 281. It's all relative. And, only Montana (14yrs) and Aikman (12yrs) have played fewer seasons than Favre, which makes his accomplishments even more remarkable.
Also, your boy Montana, he's the "all-time great" who's overrated. Winning 4 Super Bowls and MVP for 3 of them doesn't make you great, it makes you clutch. Don't confuse the two. Peyton Manning has played 4 fewer seasons than Montana and he already passed him on the all-time TD list. What this means is Montana's teams were so superb that they didn't RELY on Montana to win games. Which begs the question...how GREAT is Montana? Robery Horry is one of the most clutch players in NBA history...does that automatically make him GREAT?
Finally, any person who mentions Favre's name with the following automatically loses all credability: Jeff George, Jon Kitna, Tony Banks, Randall Cunningham, Rex Grossman, Doug Flutie, Jeff Garcia, and Drew Bledsoe. Him not being treated like these players for one bad season is your reasoning for Favre being overrated along with throwing six INTs in a playoff game, choking in the second Super Bowl and only winning ONE Super Bowl??? Wait, those aren't reasons to begin with. Those are giving three examples (one positive by the way - winning a Super Bowl, with another being strictly an opinion - choked in the second Super Bowl) with zero reasoning behind them. By the way, in Favre's worst statistical season (2005) he threw for 3,900yds, 20TD, 29INT while leading us to a winning 10-6 record. He's a legend because he wins, makes everyone around him better unlike Montana because his teammates were legends, and makes plays when there isn't a play to be made.

Um, Jeff, I couldn't have said it any better. If anyone, ahem John or KP, can refute these facts and truth I would LOVE to hear it. You absolutely nailed it. I tried saying it earlier.....obviously if you've played as many seasons as Favre has, started as many consecutive games as he has, and thrown as many passes as he has in his career, then OBVIOUSLY you are likely to throw a higher number/ratio of picks as well. But as you said, his TD/INT ratio are still better than the best of QBs to ever play the game. A-M-E-N. Well said, I agree with you totally and this pretty much leaves nothing left to argue about. I'm sure John and KP will continue to talk about how Favre will throw more picks still this season and blah blah blah, but so will the rest of them like Romo, Peyton, Brady, Big Ben....the list goes on. That is the only argument, if you can call it that, that they continue to bitch about when Favre still throws up the best numbers, period. This case is pretty much closed and the stupid article that brought it about is obviously a piece of TRASH....along with it's writer and lone followers....

This is quite possibly the worst article I have ever read in my entire life. If you truly feel Brett Favre is not a great QB, fine. But please back up your hatred for #4 with some legitimate facts. Comparing Brett Favre to the likes of Kurt Warner and Rex Grossman is ridiculous and just plain silly. Side note: Peyton Manning has just one Super Bown ring, while his post season success is very comparable to Favre's before he won a Super Bowl. I highly doubt Manning would get run out of town for throwing 6 picks in a playoff game this year. Just a thought...
