Central Midfielders : Who Is The Best Of The Premier League?

Salaar Shamsi@SalaarizationSenior Writer IAugust 1, 2008

After the enormous success of the first edition of "Who Is The Best Of The Premier League" which was based on strikers.

Fernando Torres was crowned undisputed winner by members of the Bleacher Report World Football Community who voted.

After the first edition nurtured three pick of the day votes, I figured they were a hit and who knows maybe this one will gather even more.

To follow it up, we're doing it all over again but this time picking from central midfielders, of course if I had done only midfield then there would be wingers and I would end up making a fool of myself so central midfielders only which means NO Cristiano Ronaldo.

This edition refers to CM's and CAM's only so I wouldn't be expecting Essien, Mascherano, or Hargreaves and neither should you.

I'm picking some contenders, then the readers will hopefully pick the best out of them and in the process we will create another healthy debate, so here goes..

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal-Spain)

At the tender age of 21, Fabregas has matured so much and is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the world today.

Fabregas' statistics have improved over the seasons, and he has adopted a more aggressive style of play. His importance to the team as the main creative force is also reflected in his contributing 23 assists in all competitions last season.

Not only is he a goal creator but he manages to get his name on the scoresheet as well doing it 13 times in all competitions last season. He's also a prominent part of the Spain side which recently won Euro 2008.

Is he the Best?

Paul Scholes (Manchester United-England)

At the matured age of 33, Scholes has been ever present in United's midfield, in fact he is often described as a loyal servant to the club.

A wonderful eye that can spot any teammate open and create goals within seconds makes Scholes an asset for the Red Devils.

His career at Old Trafford has seen 96 goals in 395 appearances.

Is he the Best?

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool-England)

The list probably won't be complete without the inclusion of Stevie G, who has been the one man providing hope in disappointing times to the Anfield faithful.

Scoring 96 goals in 432 appearances for the Merseyside 'Reds,' Gerrard is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

He has a knack of scoring wonder goals and has often been recognized as a 'saviour' in bad times for Liverpool.

Is he the Best?

Gareth Barry (Aston Villa-England)

Mr. Barry is rejuvenated. He's now a top contender for an England place, he's trying to move to Liverpool, why wouldn't he be on our list?

A natural left-footed player, Barry has been running Villa for the past few seasons. He can score goals with both his left and right foot and is usually termed as an underrated player.

Is he the Best?

Mikel Arteta (Everton-Spain)

Underrated is the word describe Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard moved to Everton from PSG and, as David Moyes will tell you, he's been a revelation since.

He can do it all, from whipping crosses, taking set pieces, and finding the bottom corner.

Is he the Best?

Micheal Ballack (Chelsea-Germany)

Ballack is wonderfully refined player who is a very important part of Chelsea's setup. The German captain has a natural eye for goals.

He has formed a decent partnership with likes of Lampard and Essien over the past two seasons.

Little Kaiser has 38 goals in 87 games for Germany while his club career with Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Kaiserslautern, and Chelsea has brought him 126 goals in 429 appearances.

Is he the Best?

Six contenders on the plate for you there! I've tried to keep it to a player per team but I'm sure some of you will be thinking "Oh Madness! He's left out Lampard or Carrick or Elano or Jenas or Nolan or whoever!"

I'd tell you "No worries, mate! If you think they are better then those on the list then tell us who you think is the best central midfielder in the Premier League.

And more importantly, This editions refers to CM's and CAM's only so I wouldn't be expecting Essien, Mascherano, or Hargreaves and neither should you.

Who do you think is the best central midfielder in the Premier League and he doesn't have to be from these six?
