This past weekend gave football fans some of the most shocking upsets of the year. From Wyoming handling Tennessee (pictured above), to Iowa stunning Penn State, and even Michigan squaring their shoulders to whip Minnesota and win the Little Brown Jug, upsets were part of the landscape.
This week we must face the possibility of another week to astonish as many of the top teams are going on the road. The reality is we could end up with three undefeated teams in Utah, Boise State, and Ball State.
Yet none of these will qualify for the BCS Title Game. Let's take a closer look at the weekend ahead.
BABY'S LOSERS 11/15/08
1) NOTRE DAME VS. THE NAVY (IN BALTIMORE)–There is pressure on Charlie Weis but, he does look to come back for next season? After that, the job is Urban Meyer's if he wants it. Can an improving Clausen make the difference? Baby's Loser, The Navy.
2) GEORGIA @ AUBURN–The Bulldogs are undisciplined, the most penalized team in the SEC. Some fans claim officials have it in for them because they are so talented. Along with Tennessee, the Tigers are the biggest disappointment in the SEC. Baby's Loser, Auburn.
3) MISSISSIPPI STATE @ ALABAMA–If the public believes Sylvester Croom will roll over for his alma mater they are mistaken. Look for a tough, hard-fought game. Typical SEC action. Baby's Loser, in a close one, Mississippi State.
4) OHIO STATE @ ILLINOIS–Revenge is the operative word here. Yes, the Illini have a great player in Juice Williams, but it is the Buckeyes who may have the defense to contain him. Pryor will be the difference for Tressel's Buckeyes. Baby's Loser, Illinois.
5) PURDUE @ IOWA– As startling as Iowa's upset of Penn State was, the question here is do the Hawkeyes have anything left this week for Joe Tiller's Boilermakers? In a game that should go down to the wire, Baby's Loser, Purdue.
6) NEBRASKA @ KANSAS STATE–The Cornhuskers are Dow Jonesers, up and down. While the Wildcats are only a shadow of what they were in the Bill Snyder era, it can hardly be all blamed on Ron Prince's coaching. In a tough one, Baby's Loser, Kansas State.
7) TEXAS @ KANSAS– Mark Mangino has created a strong program in Lawrence, and it is obvious why he is high on the Clemson vacancy list. If he had the personnel of last year this would be a toss-up.
Texas seems to be too strong for the Jayhawks but, could the suspension and dismissal of Longhorn Buck Burnette upset team chemistry? Burnette has apologized for posting an internet racial slur concerning the newly elected President, Barack Obama. We'll have to see how it plays out. Baby's Loser, Kansas.
GAME OF THE WEEK
8) CALIFORNIA @ OREGON STATE– Sometimes circumstances indicate what should be a classic battle. This one has all the elements of it. Both teams have outstanding coaching and are bowl-bound.
If Mike Riley's Beavers can win out they will go to the Rose Bowl as Pac-10 Champions since they defeated Southern Cal earlier this season. The Beavers lead the Pac-10 in time of possession with over 32 minutes a game and are No. 2 in rushing defense. Baby's Loser, in a tight one, California.
RACE FOR THE TITLE
NAME LAST WEEK MISSED THE YEAR/PERCENT
"12" 5–3 WYOMING, IOWA, MICH 71–17 81%
TIMOTHY 4–4 WYOMING, IOWA, MICH, TEX TECH 68–20 77%
BABY TATE WENT 5–3, MISSING WYOMING, IOWA, AND MICHIGAN FOR A 68–20 RECORD FOR THE YEAR AND 76 PERCENT.
The past week was extremely tough on the competitors of Baby's Losers. Wyoming was missed by every predictor except for Issac and Adam.
What did these two with the ancient Old Testament names know about the mysterious Cowboys who shocked the world with a 13–7 win at Tennessee? Inquiring minds would like to know.
A tip of the hat to Chase and Tony who, along with Adam, went 6–2 to lead the group. Chase and Tony's secret? Upset special picks of Iowa over Penn State. Aaron picked Iowa and Michigan to surprise Minnesota in the Battle For The Little Brown Jug. The Jug game was good to Kent, Dan, and Miami Mitch, who speared that upset.
Josh picked Iowa to upset Penn State and Michigan to upset Minnesota in Jug action. Daniel had the quote of the week, calling the Big 12 "The Circle Of Death." That would be a good name for an article!
6-2: Tony, Chase, Adam. 5-3: Aaron, Red Raider, Josh, Bobby, and JJ. 4-4: Colin, Cliff, Kent, Brad, Dan, and Daniel. 3-5: Issac, Michael, and Jon. 2-6: Mitch 1-7: Ryan. Thanks to everyone for playing and good luck to everyone this week!

I am heartbroken after a 4-4 showing last week.
from about 1 month ago
Hey, that could be 100% Colin.
4-4 last week is like 5-3 any other week, 6-2 won it! Who knew Wyoming would go into Knoxville and beat Tennessee? The Vols got rid of Fulmer just in time, he is the Titanic !
Thanks Colin.........
Leave it to Tennessee to help put Wyoming in the news.....boy I've gotten cynical.
I dig this series, watch out for Kansas this week, Texas better not be sleeping.
from about 1 month ago
Thanks Brian, we enjoy having your comments. Wyoming has had really good teams in the past but, it has been years since they had anything that should defeat Tennessee at home. You would have to go back to the 1967 season when Tennessee went to the Orange Bowl and Wyoming went to the Sugar Bowl for the last time they were equal at a high level.
I don't think the Vol players put forth much of an effort but don't take anything away from the Cowboys they fought hard.
A nice change at the top to a Muschamp, a Davis, a Kiffin, or dare the Vols dream it– A Leach would turn the team around. Need a little pick up, that's all.
If 6-2's the best, I guess I did fine with 5-3. Anyway, heres my list:
1) Notre Dame - I haven't been following these 2 teams very much so its a guess.
2) Auburn - The tigers are doing really bad this year.
3) MS St. - Bama's lost 2 in a row but no this time. Besides, Bama is ours!
4) Illinois - IL isn't half the team it was last year.
5) Purdue - The only memorable thing Purdue did this year was that hook and lateral against Michigan.
6) Kansas St. - They're such a mess this year. Plus they don't play Texas this year, so thats one less win.
7) Kansas - Texas is too powerful for Kansas. Stadium empties by halftime one more time.
8) California - Cal's defense is good but Rodgers is better.
Such a pity BT doesn't have USC-Florida in his list. Thats gonna be a great game this weekend.
from about 1 month ago
Great game? It's a 21 point spread! Who would take Carolina? I loaded this week up with all the beloveds of fandom with Notre Dame, Alabama, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Georgia, Auburn, and more of the Alabama alumi association with Mike Riley and Sylvester Croom! A virtual plethora of panaramic picks to choose from!
We'll put the Carolina-Clemson and Florida-Florida State games on there, we'll get some takers either way that weekend.
Mitch's Losers...thought going by last week's picks they may be winners..
1) Notre Dame-Lousy team even worse on the road
2) Auburn-If the Bulldogs score 4 they are all set.
3) Alabama-Guess I better not say that too loud http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3693334
4) Ohio State-Illinois has been good week/bad week all year, this is a good week.
5)Purdue- Not a good way to go out for Tiller
6)K-State- Lame duck coach with a lame team.
7) Kansas- Yeah right
8) Cal-Coin Toss
from about 1 month ago
Mitch you continue to terrorize Notre Dame fans, no doubt revenge for the '88 and '90 games.
I saw where an Alabama fan killed a man who was pulling for LSU, so I know what you are referencing. There is some controversy about whether the other man really pulled for Alabama also and was just harassing the killing Tide-man. I understand liquor played a part as well. Horrible.
Mitch you can't toss a coin on the best game of the day ! What kind of sports-authority is that ?!?!
Kansas will have to depend Texas continuing to show signs of fatigue after a rough October in order to upset the Longhorns. Any word on your end about Mangino being headed to Clemson?
Thanks MiamiMitch, and I encourage all readers to visit your web site for the truth, as you know it !
---Losers---
1.) Navy - Lightning won't streak the same game twice.
2.) Auburn - Horrible offense meets a Top-notch offense.
3.) Mississippi State - Alabama won't lose until the SEC CG.
4.) Illinois - "Revenge is a meal best served cold."
5.) Purdue - Iowa's defense is just too tough.
6.) Nebraska - KSU pulls away at home.
7.) Kansas - Jimson must be having nightmares somewhere.
8.) Oregon State - USC will be watching this one closely.
from about 1 month ago
Kent with another upset special, this time Kansas State over Nebraska. He also takes Cal on the road against the Beavers!
Jimson? He's probably dismissed the losses the Jayhawks have and says they are really victories in disguise and Kansas is the true #1 team! If Mark Mangino bolts for Clemson and he's left with Bob Davie as a coach he will start having nightmares!
Thanks Kent, always good to hear from you.

I'm so depressed right now, I don't even care about my record. I agree with all of yours except I think ND will lose to Navy.

After a pitiful week, where I bet with my heart- maybe time to get back to business. Man does Tech look good. Rooting for Oklahoma hurts me... but somehow we have to get in a tie to see what the computers spit out.
BT- as you have been the crown prince of the South Carolina Bandwagon (and the anti Texas wagon for that matter) surprised you don't have the Flordia -South Carolina tilt in here
also- a fact check... Burnette was dismissed, not suspended.
from about 1 month ago
Suspended was a nicer word, the boy probably didn't realize the overall effect of his actions. Just because I put up a picture of me from 1965 doesn't mean everyone should go back to 1965! Next thing you know somebody will be offended and then you got trouble.
You think the Navy will overwhelm Notre Dame for the 2nd year in a row?
Carolina is a 21 point underdog on the road, I didn't think we could get one person to take them so they didn't make the cut. Only so many Wyoming-Tennessee games in a season for the predictors.
Anti-Texas faction is a matter of perception. I told the truth and you thought it was ant-Texas. The truth will set you free.
Thanks for the picks, Ryan!

Baby-
How do you think your cocks will fare this weekend against the mighty gators? Why is this ranked matchup being left off your pickems?
from about 1 month ago
Because no one would take Carolina and we have to have a little more controversy than that to generate interest. Example: Josh, just above, picks Miss State to beat Alabama and Kansas to beat Texas. You wouldn't have gotten that from Carolina-Florida.
While I'm certain Carolina will equate themselves well, I can see the Gators escaping by a field goal 17–14.
Thanks Carson.
from about 1 month ago
HUH? I don't understand at all, my man.
The Gamecocks are ranked and playing pretty well, so I guess I don't understand you when you say no one would take the Cocks. Especially if you have guys taking unranked Miss St. over the #1 team in the land?!<.....you say no one would take Carolina, but guys are taking Miss. St. is exactly why im not understanding what you mean?
Personally I think Carolina has FAR better chance of beating UF, thank does Kansas or Miss St. winning
oh well
Go Gators
from about 1 month ago
I'm taking the Gamecocks too and wrote an article about it titled "Florida Will Overlook South Carolina: Unconventional Wisdom". The media has all but crowned Florida as SEC Champion and national title finalist. Look at the articles on this site: it's all about Alabama vs. Florida and Florida vs. [insert Big 12 team here] for the national title. I don't care how great a coach Urban Meyer is: these Freshman and Sophomores don't remember '05, South Carolina is peaking and dangerous, and Florida is ripe for an upset. It's the game of the week and will be televised nationally ... I too wish you had included it. =)
from about 1 month ago
Hey, I hope you are right.
People are taking Miss St because they beat Alabama the last 2 years and locals know the Maroons have Bama's number which makes it a good choice. People are taking Kansas because Texas is on the road. Neither of these cases apply to Carolina who lost by 20 at home, to Florida last year.
It's an uninteresting choice for my series this week.
Tony's Losers:
1) Navy- although I haven't been this confused in a long time.
2) Auburn- they're just awful
3) Miss St.- Saban will have Bama more than ready
4) Illinois- a shell of last year's team
5) Purdue- I don't see the Boilermakers winning AT Iowa.
6) Kansas St- a team in disarray
7) Kansas- just a bad week for the whole state
8) Cal- OSU forces USC to actually LEAVE for a bowl game.
from about 1 month ago
Great work last week to lead the way Tony!
What if Iowa is flat? What about the final tour of Joe Tiller?
If Sou Cal has to leave town for a bowl game their fans will have a nervous breakdown! "What is this place, this New Orleans, we thought it sank like Atlantis, or did it rise like a Phoenix, wait yes, Phoenix would be a good bowl game for us! Texas is there as our opponent again? Well then, Miami, that's the ticket, yes we challenge Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl !"
from about 1 month ago
HAHAHAHA
thanks Baby.. I just had a feeling about them Hawkeyes.
Iowa may be flat, but the fact that its a home game really helps.. I guarantee the fans will not be flat. And Joe Tiller deserves a final tour.. the game has passed him and I never thought he was that great of a coach to begin with.
I'd love to see North Carolina beat USC in the Orange Bowl. That would make my life.

Man...tough to believe so many people are picking for MY Beavs...good to read.
I think this is the surprise game of the week, two explosive offenses and stout defenses. Pac-10 football at it's best. OSU is rollin right now and Cal played very well in the Coliseum against SC after beating Oregon.
Reser will be rockin you can bet on that. OSU puts up over 30, when they do that, they don't lose very often.
Beavs 34 Cal 27
from about 1 month ago
Travis, you know the Alabama people follow Oregon State as "Tuscaloosa-West" since Mike Riley played for bear Bryant at Alabama. That was Bear on Riley's shoulder that put the game plan together to defeat the vaunted Pete Carroll and his Trojans two of the past three times they've faced each other.
Riley and Sylvester Croom of Mississippi State played their entire careers as teammates at Alabama. The student manager at that time for Alabama was David Cutcliffe who is now the coach at Duke. As an Oregon State fan you should note the last time the Beavers were in the Rose Bowl (1964 season) the head coach of the Beavers was Tommy Prothro who had played quarterback at Duke. When Prothro was the QB at Duke the Blue Devils played Oregon State in the Rose Bowl!
What a roundabout world it is.
Thanks for the comment Travis and go Beavers !
from about 1 month ago
Not to mention, we now have Sylvester Croom's nephew Howard Croom now playing at TE for us, a pretty good player too.
Pac-10 is getting exciting now that it's starting to take shape. Cal vs. OSU, Arizona vs. Oregon, Civil War, Oregon State. vs. Arizona.
Great games, it's just too bad so many people shun the pac-10 for a few early season losses. I'm rootin for Alabama to make it all the way, even though I hate the SEC...they're a quality team that plays with intensity and great character.

Winners:
1. Notre Dame...in a close one
2. Georgia...by 3 td's
3. Alabama...revenge is sweet, Bama BIG!
4. Ohio State...Beanie and Pryor go crazy
5. Iowa...won't have a let down
6. Nebraska...another close one
7. Texas...in a rout
8. Oregon State...enroute to the Rose Bowl

12, you know I really hope Oregon State does make it to the Rose Bowl.
You go with Notre Dame and Nebraska close but say Alabama and Texas big, while Georgia derstroys Auburn by 21.
Iowa with no let down, and no hope for Illinois versus Ohio State.
I was thinking when putting this list together, the teams read like the "Who's Who" of 20th Century College Football. Look at those name !
Thanks 12 and good luck to our year long #1 man !

1)NOTRE DAME - Leach to Notre Dame?
2)GEORGIA - Auburn has to get their act together sooner or later, right?
3)ALABAMA - I know I'm crazy for this - but I really haven't been impressed with Bama this year and since Tech is off this weekend, we've got to see an upset somewhere in the top 5...
4)ILLINOIS
5)IOWA
6)KANSAS STATE
7)KANSAS
8)OREGON STATE

Oregon State to lose the Game of the Week? No hope for Kansas State? Auburn to upset Georgia in the oldest continually played rivalry in the Deep South! Down goes Notre Dame !
Aaron with some outstanding thoughts there. Could break it open.

sorry for the all caps... and btw, i would have taken Carolina.
I too would have taken Carolina -- looks like the fans have spoken BabyTate ... you might need to go back, edit and add that game. ;-) haha.
Here's my picks:
1. Navy over Notre Dame, and I barely would call it an upset
2. Georgia over Auburn, handily
3. Alabama over Mississippi State, as they escape being "Croomed" -- but not by much
4. Ohio State over Illinois; Illinois is just too inconsistent -- Ohio St. now playing for the Rose Bowl
5. Purdue over Iowa; 13-10, try to find a more boring game this weekend in Division I-A
6. Nebraska over K-State; two disappointing programs this year - this could easily go either way
7. Texas over Kansas; what's the over / under on this? I'll take the over.
8. Oregon State over California; home field is enough to make the difference for the Beavers
from about 1 month ago
Never spend a second thinking about what could have been done differently.
The first game I'll be watching Saturday is Iowa vs. Purdue.
Wow, lots of Miss. State picks. They got blown out by TENNESSEE, for heaven's sake! And lost 3-2 to AUBURN! Have any of you actually seen them this year?!?
from about 1 month ago
Gary, this is all that matters. Croom whipped bama the past two years. Croom is a Bama man. A King-Bama man. He knows how to handle Bama.
Florida fans laugh at Bama's chances verus them because they beat LSU by 30 and the Tide had to go to OT to escape the Tigers. Won't make any difference when they get out there on that field playing for the SEC Title. That game will be settled by backbone. Just like the Maroons-Red Elephants this week. Should be a 17–14 type game.
Thanks for the input !

Wow, just surprised folks think Miss St. can hang with UA. While it may not be a blow-out, it won't be close.
Losers:
1) Navy - they can only beat ND once every oh couple of decades.
2) Auburn - the Dawgs are struggling and Auburn could be just what the Dr. ordered.
3) Mississippi State - Alabama is playing every week to keep its spot in the BCS game.
4) Illinois - What happened to this team?
5) Purdue - Tiller's nightmare season is almost over.
6) Nebraska - too inconsistent for me.
7) Kansas - Colt McCoy is licking his chops to face this D.
8) California - Oregon State...Pac-10 Champs?? What?

BT...
After reading a few comments trailing your fine article I must remind readers that constantly claiming that Alabama will tank to my Gators in the SEC championship game is JUST the type of motivation Bama needs to pull off a win.
Now I read the stats like anybody else and yes, I will be expecting Florida to win out and claim a trip to Miami Gardens this January... but we all know that post season college play is one of the most emotion driven sporting events today. Urban did wonders to get his Gators prepared and motivated to destroy Ohio State two years ago... his main motivation point? All the Ohio State hype!!! This game will boil down to this... the winner will be the coach who can prepare his team to take advantage of the others weaknesses. create an air of confidence without becoming overconfident, AND keep his players focused 60 minutes.
Pics this week...
I'm just gonna beg the almighty to grant Navy one more win!

The Navy-Notre Dame game should be a great one in Baltimore, good luck to your Middies!

Losers this week...
1. Notre Dame (The Midshipmen can run the ball...that's bad news for the Irish)
2. Auburn (The Dawgs need a morale boost and they will take their frustrations out on the Tigers.)
3. Mississippi State (Bama is too close to drop one at home)
4. Illinois (The Buckeyes have more than revenge in mind. The BT championship and a BCS bowl are motivation enough.)
5. Purdue (The Hawkeyes will more more than enough left to handle the Boilermakers. Gang Greene will be out in force!)
6. K-State (The Huskers are on the rise and take one on the road. Could be close, though)
7. Kansas (Texas is fighting for position and has too much at stake)
8. Cal (The Beavs are fighting for the Rose Bowl, but this will an outstanding game)

3-5? Yikes! I gotta do better this week. I'll at least get one guaranteed pick (you'll see later).
Winners:
1. Navy- ND has yet to beat a team with a pulse. Bad news for the Irish: Navy has a running pulse.
2. Georgia- I know that Jordan Hare can be an intimidating place, but Auburn is just flat out bad offensively this year. It's a rivalry game, so it'll be a close victory, but the Dawgs win.
3. Bama- I seem to remember a 3-2 score earlier in the season, and the Bulldogs scored the 2 points with their defense. Bama's defense is good too. Bama's offense is much better than Auburn's though.
P.S. I could see one of these SEC matchups ending up as an upset, but I can't pick either one over the other.
4. Ohio State- Enjoy the highlight video of 2007, Illini fans. Something happened to your team when Mendelhall left for the NFL. Ohio State looks like a much better team with Pryor under center and Beanie Wells healthy. And with the Penn State loss, there's still hope for the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl.
5. Iowa- Greene is a difference maker. Purdue is really mediocre at best.
6. Nebraska- It might be close for a little while, but the Huskers will exert their will on the K State Kitty Cats by the 4th quarter.
7. Texas- If Texas had gotten through their gauntlet, I had this as an upset special. In 2006, Texas almost lost to a less talented team in Lawrence than they will be facing on Saturday. Texas' pass defense will be tested, but Texas will win since they have their loss.
8. Oregon State- Please, please, please, Beavers, do not let USC slip into their hometown bowl this year. The Trojans need to play a team not from the Big 10. Reser rocks the Bears into submission.
9. Oklahoma- Bye may score a touchdown as a result of bad kickoff coverage, but OU will score 70+ points this week.

BT, didn't mean to give you a scare, but I have been away on business up in TN this week, and I am about to leave home again, heading up to T-Town for the Bama-MSU game. So, I have been very busy, but I didn't forget the "Losers" and had to log on and pick 'em before I left home again. SO...
Losers:
1. Navy - ND is struggling, but I don't see two straight to Navy. Close game.
2. Auburn - Anyone hear the final call on the UT-Martin game? You would have thought Auburn just won the national championship game. It is getting pretty bad on the plains, it will get ugly today!
3. MSU - Bama will not lose to MSU a third straight time. Mark it down. Bama will make a statement before going into the bye week and preparing for Auburn.
4. Illinois - Not this year, Zook. Buckeyes deliver a blackeye to the Fighting Illini.
5. Purdue - Iowa is on a high, but I jusr don't see them getting knocked down this week.
6. Kansas State - Nebraska takes care of business today.
7. Kansas - Texas is just too good for the Jay Hawks.
8. California - OSU to the Rose Bowl...WOW!
