Come To Think of It...What If the New York Yankees Bought Every Free Agent?

Well, here's a thought that is meant to be humorous, but is still a bit scary at the same time. What if the New York Yankees signed every major free agent? And then turned around and forced other teams to trade with them for their services?

Talk about concerns over all of the world's banks consolidating! And thoughts of Microsoft dominating the computing industry.

This would create baseball's first trading monopoly, as the Bronx Bombers would act as the resellers of baseball's best free agents.

Don't laugh, not only do the Yankees have the resources, agents for the players and the MLB player's union itself might support this because it would introduce another "middle man," which would help drive up the price of each player.

Of course, most major free agents today insist upon a no-trade clause as part of any free-agent contract. But all things are negotiable.

So, let's say the Yanks go out and sign CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster, Ben Sheets, Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood, and Francisco Rodriguez? And then sign Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, Rafael Furcal, Pat Burrell, and Adam Dunn.

Can you imagine the line forming to try and arrange a trade with the Yankees? Instead of dealing with agents, each player's "agent", in effect, would be the New York Yankees.

This way, the Yankees basically pick and choose which players they want to hang onto and receive prospects and draft picks in return for the others.

In this economy, where there may be one bank someday, government-run businesses, and other advantages, it's not difficult to see the Yankees getting in on the act. After all, they always say the rich get richer.

Come to think of it, the Evil Empire can get even more evil.

  1. <3

  2. best team is baseball period!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. It's funny, but it's not. Please don't suggest this, it could actually happen. The Yankees have shown in the past that they don't care about the integrity of the game, as long as they can win. It's because of situations like this that baseball needs a salary cap.

    1. OK Andrew, but if we get a salary cap I would want a salary floor, too.

    2. It actually can't..

There are quotas on how many Type A-B free agents a team can sign depending on how many FA's file for free agency.... So they'd run out sooner or later.

Then again, I'm sure enough filed to the point where they could sign most of those guys..

Still they wouldn't.. At least I hope not..

    3. I agree, a salary floor would be optimal as well. I don't know what's worse for the game, big money teams like the Sox and Yanks spending everyone else out of the league, or teams like the Marlins who simply refuse to spend any money. I'd say put the floor at $50 million and the cap at $100 million. If your team can't afford to put up $50 million, than I'm not sure they should stay in that market.

  4. Funny :) but impossible sadly because of the 40 man roster. They'd have to trade every player within their 10 day DFA window or else they'd be screwed. Maybe one day......one day........

    1. Thanks Matthew.

  5. i believe there is a rule about not being able to trade guys that quickly

    1. I think you're right, Blorp.

    1. I just finished reading it Edgar, nice work. Great minds think alike, I guess...

  6. It is a good question, but as a die hard Yankees fan, I would be opposed to the idea. haha. It's a good thought though, if we could just make our line-up and rotation the way we wanted it.

Based on the people you listed, this is what the 2009 Yankees could look like.

Rotation: Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Lowe, Sheets with Joba, Marte, Wood, Dempster, K-Rod, and Mo in the bullpen.

    Line-up:
    SS Derek Jeter
    RF Bobby Abreu
    LF Manny Ramirez
    3B Alex Rodriguez
    1B Mark Teixeira
    DH Adam Dunn
    CF Pat Burrell
    C Jorge Posada
    2B Robinson Cano

    Bench:
Rafeal Furcal, Jose Molina, Melky Cabrera, Xavier Nady, Nick Swisher

    1. Shashwat, not a bad lineup, eh? I think they could win a few games with that, don't you?

    2. hahaha... there is no question that the Yankees could dominate with MLB with that roster. It would cost us around $300 million a year to cover it though. I don't know if the Yankees really want that, I know the fans already pay enough so we don't want that for sure.
