Come To Think Of It...Time For Bears To Fire Lovie Smith and Start Over

This is not just a knee-jerk reaction to an embarrassing loss to the Green Bay Packers. No, this has been brewing for awhile now.

And enough is enough!

It is time to fire Lovie Smith and his band of not-ready-for-prime-time coaching staff. Keep special teams coach Dave Toub, but defensive coordinator Bob Babich? Hit the road. Ron Turner? Go Back to the Illini. And take the rest of the coaches with you.

Lovie Smith and his insistence on stubbornly sticking to a defensive scheme that doesn't effectively utilize the talent he has needs to go bye-bye.

And take Jerry Angelo and his horrendous first round draft choices and his inability to find a quarterback and bring back a better football mind to run things.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

We already lost a good coordinator in Ron Rivera due to Smith's preference to have loyalty and friendship take precedence over production. It's time to blow this thing up and start over.

The defense can't stop anyone. The offense is too predictable. And even the changes implemented to improve the offense this year took far too long to materialize. Why couldn't the no-huddle, shotgun and throwing to the tight end have been thought of last year when Rex was struggling so badly?

Look, I understand that not everyone can be Mike Ditka. But somtimes as head coach you need to breathe fire into your players and let them know you won't tolerate this kind of play. But the maddeningly calm and stubborn Lovie just keeps saying the same things, and keeps putting up with the same crap, week after week.

Well, I don't know about you, but I've had enough.

Let's get a head coach who isn't afraid to make adjustments when the plan isn't working. And one that has the necessary self confidence to surround himself with competent assistants.

So, goodbye Lovie, don't let the door hit you on the way out. Come to think of it, the sooner the better.

  1. Lovie has proved to be perhaps the game day coach in the league. The defense, his specialty, has surprisingly bad and unimaginative.

Pure Coaching mismanagement cost the Bears three key games this year blown leads against Carolina and Tampa then the pathetic squid kick against Atlanta.

Ron Turner haunts the Bears like Freddy haunted Elm Street...no matter the nightmares he constantly causes he just will not leave, or be fired....

The ugliest collapse has been the defense. The pass defense has been bad, the pass rush nil, and now the run defense tanked. The soft underbelly of the team is trembling and exposed, a weak defense and an aging offensive line.

Lovie won't be fired but this seasons been hanging on a shaky string...and I think the string just snapped.

At least the St Louis Rammed loom...if they drop that one, yea gawds by the Good Eye of Odin ugliness and fear will run rampant in Chicago Bear land...

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting Dan.

    2. Yeah I meant to say Lovie is the worst game day coach in the league....Norv Turners usual collapse ripped apart me chain of thought...

  2. If the Rams move the ball as well as everyone that should be the final litmus test, or nail in the coffin for Bob Babich at the very least.
Some of the players also need to be held responsible for their play as well. So just as an opinion, in the event that the game this weekend is close and the defense plays the same as it has been playing this year. I would imagine some serious overhauling going on this next off-season starting with the upper management and coordinators.
Time may have come and already passed.

    1. You're right, Marc, it's not just about the coaches. Players like Hester, Urlacher, Harris, Tillman and Vasher need to look in the mirror too. Thanks for reading.

  3. I think you guys are giving Lovie way too much credit for the bears shortcomings. Ever since Lovie has arrived, the Bears have been competitive. I believe that more of the blame needs to be passed on the other coaches. The Bears could easily be 9-2 right now and sitting pretty hoping for a top seed. And had it not been for numerous injuries last season, i believe they could have been in contention yet again. As far as Lovie's scheme goes, i don't think it's the scheme that doesn't work. I believe the players are simply not executing. The scheme seemed to work pretty well when they made it to the super bowl. The Bears play up, or down, to their competition. That is their main problem. i know i sound like im contradicting myself, But don't blame Lovie's coaching ability for that, blame his motivational style. I think sometimes the players just react differently.

    1. Well that's my point - Lovie picked his coaches or at least agreed with them. He was the one who wanted Babich over Rivera. It's really not the coaches fault they were put into situations they weren't ready for. And the players have to take some blame too, of course, as they are out there, good point. But just how does one separate motivational style from coaching? Isn't motivating the troops part of coaching?

  4. Lovie couldn't motivate a man on fire to accept water. He needs to go. His staff is pathetic, and Jerry Angelo is a joke. These players need motivation and they look like they just don't care. Pisses me off when you have young guns like Forte trying with no help. No D at all either. No pass D, No pressure D, and now their rush is for crap. It's embarassing!!! Jerry Angelo has got to go also. Can't we get a decent GM??

    1. "Lovie couldn't motivate a man on fire to accept water" lol, funny stuff Craig.
