The 2008 Philadelphia Eagles: A Greek Tragedy in the Making

Last night, I watched West Side Story with my 12-year-old daughter, thinking about the 1960s Romeo and Juliet-based story and the Greek tragedies.

The marriage of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and head coach Andy Reid set the stage for a tale of epic proportions. They've had 10 years together, beginning with a caretaker named Doug Pederson, and now with a young whipper-snapper quarterback, the Eagles' first pick, Kevin Kolb.

Because, as another Bleacher Report and Eagles fan reported, this is Donovan's last stand. And if he has another bad game, well, Romeo must die.

Andy Reid, not to be stereotypical or uncaring, is a Pagliacci, or clown, in this whole tragedy. You see, I do not like arrogance, and Reid reeks of it.

Not that I need to know everything, but until he gets someone in there who can run the ball and admits the team does not run the ball, he is the target of my anger. Because as much as I try, I do care.

And until that time, he is a joke in my eyes.

"I have to do a better job," Reid sings. "Ha, ha, ha, ha."

Reid is setting up McNabb for failure. If McNabb gets up for the Cardinals game, then he is a better man than I thought.

It is a no-win situation. If they lose, then the chant for Kolb will start. If they win, so what? Talk to me after the next two wins in a row.

If Reid, as GM, wasted a draft choice on Lorenzo Booker, then run him. So what if he can't block? Join the fullback and tight end. Are they doing any better?

Did Klecko, not all of his fault, have any blocking effect to help Westbrook make that 3rd-and-1 in New York? That was pathetic. Hopefully, Buckhalter is better because Westbrook is not 100 percent.

Reid has handed Donovan a sword. It is up to Donovan to use the sword to his good, or plunge it into his stomach, like in the opera Madame Butterfly.

This ain't a pretty situation. In fact, hey, you North Jersey-ians, it smells like the City of Arthur Kills.

And I fear, this will be the final act for the Mr. McNabb and Coach Andy Reid.

It ain't over until the fat man sings.
