Roy Jones-Joe Calzaghe: What If Roy Were in His Prime?

Boxing, Joe Calzaghe, Roy Jones Jr.

As I stated both in my article and YouTube video, Roy Jones Jr. was definitely past his prime.

The real question that needed to be answered that night was just how much does Roy have left in the tank or even better yet can the good ole "RJ" make a surprise visit in the ring? The answer was clear about a couple rounds into the fight that Joe Calzaghe was obviously the better man THAT NIGHT.

I am still proud of Roy however, and he still is the legend that he already established himself to be for many years already. He showed true heart and courage to go the full distance and was very sportsman like in congratulating Joe and not making any excuses or complaining at the end of the fight like so many other fighters do.

It only took a few rounds to show us just how far gone Roy was that night.  I always felt Roy should have retired after obtaining the Heavyweight belt from John Ruiz and then definitely after going back down to Light Heavy weight to obtain that belt from Tarver.

But what can you do when your favorite fighter decides to fight on?

As a true fan of Roy Jones I can only support and back him up each and every time he steps in that ring. But again if anything was proved that night he fought Joe Calzaghe it would be that Roy definitely should finally hang the gloves up for good.

I'm no hater and I give Joe his props as of RIGHT NOW he is currently the MAN. No one out there is even really a threat to him at this stage. He has the baddest workrate on the planet and definitely one of the top workrates in history.

Many Americans are hoping that Chad Dawson could be the one to finally give Joe his first 0, but I feel Joe would be just too much for Chad as of right now. Chad was easily floored by Adamek and he won a controversial win to Glen Johnson, who many felt Johnson clearly won the fight.

But it is amazing how many people actually believe if Joe fought a PRIME Roy that he would still defeat a PRIME Roy. That is just ridiculous.

Hands down if a PRIME Roy fought Joe like the one who fought Clinton Woods or maybe even the one who fought Tarver the first time, we would have a much different outcome. Roy would have stopped Joe.

It's True we will officially never know how the fight would turn out had they both fought before Roy decided to go up to Heavyweight. But that again was the major cause for the decline and fall of Roy Jones, going up to Heavyweight and then months later dropping all that weight of muscle thus taking its toll on Roy's body diminishing his muscle, power, reflexes, and quite arguably his chin as well.

Does one possibly think that Joe Calzaghe could go all the way up to Heavyweight and win a belt and come back down and say fight a prime Tarver and win? The answer is definitely no. It takes a legend like Roy with ridiculous talent and skills to pull of something so crazy like that.

Again we do not have any time machines so one can even make the point that it is pointless to even mention how a PRIME Roy would do against Joe Calzaghe, but if you would want to see strong evidence of how a PRIME  Roy would do against Joe Calzaghe just re-watch ROUND ONE of their fight and visualize that to be the tempo of how their fight would pan out with Roy turning up the pace and ultimately stopping Joe.

If a old way past prime Roy can so easily floor Joe like that imagine what a PRIME Roy would have done to Joe.

Happy Thanksgiving to All.

Remember all the things that you should be thankful for.

GOD Bless,

KING J

  1. Can't say. Prime Jones vs. prime Calzaghe would be an interesting contest. But Roy will win, though not in a convincing manner. Calzaghe has skills that RJJ cannot underestimate.

    1. Hey bro thanks for reading my article. If possible watch RJJ vs James Toney. Or basically any RJJ fight prior to going up to Heavyweight on YouTube and see just how amazing roy's power, speed, ridiculous natural talent was in his prime!

      have a good one bro!

  2. It would undoubtedly be a close contest because RJJ's speed would be matched by Calzaghe and his workrate would make every round competitive. The knockdown cannot be considered as Calzaghe always recovers and can handle the strongest of shots so its not as if RJJ could blow him away. In terms of boxing ability it also has to go to Joe who doesn't just rely on speed and reflexes. I think it would be a close contest that could go either way although I'd favour Calzaghe because of his ability to adapt during a fight.

    1. hey bro thanks for reading the article. I have to admit Joe's one of the best fighters to recover, adapt, and figure out his opponents in the mid to late rounds shoot he turns it up from about round 2 or so.

but Roy in his prime GOD DAMN he was a MONSTER. ive never seen any athlete with such ridiculous natural talent, speed, power, reflexes. he got away with murder in that ring meaning 99.9 percent of great athletes would not get away with the moves he's pulled off in his prime. im talking prior to the heavweight fight.

  3. Yeah, but you don't seem to remember Roy Jones never, ever got hurt or tired in his prime! I think either Roy Jones would easily win by UD or if Calzaghe gets hurt, then all hell would break loose and Roy Jones would finish him. People may say Robinson was more skilled or Whitaker is better defensively, but no with unbiased set of eyes can say that someone had faster and more coordinated punches than Roy...he was a beast!

  4. thanks for reading and responding bro! yeah alot of people MUST HAVE FORGOT! ahhaa
