Broncos-Chiefs: Trap Game? Not This Time

Flashback to week four, where the Denver Broncos were the fashionable bandwagon sitting at 3-0, about to face the lowly Chiefs.

Denver should have coasted, and won, as I foolishly predicted by 40 or more points.  However, Kansas City showed up to play, despite the fact that they were 0-3, and the Broncos were absolutely stunned as the Chiefs handed them a 33-19 loss.

The Chiefs (2-10) have been awful this season, ranking 32nd in total defense, 30th in points allowed, and in the bottom ten of nearly all offensive categories (rushing:  12th).

However, the Broncos are going to approach their home game against the Chiefs as though they are playing a 10-2 squad.

Why?

The Broncos have lost three straight home games this season, the worst streak they have had in recent years.

As Henry Gula earlier reported, it seems as though the Broncos grow complacent whenever they beat a good team and face a crappy one the following week.

Well, Broncos:  The third time is the charm.

Not only can Denver all but lock up the division on Sunday, but they could get some sweet revenge against the team that stole their momentum early this season.

They can do this by game-planning for Peyton Hillis to tote the rock thirty times.

The Chiefs have the league's 31st ranked rush defense, but they have forced a ton of turnovers.  Don't expect quarterback Jay Cutler to throw it 40 times like he did against the Jets last week.

So is this a trap game for Denver?

This guy says not a chance, especially because of what happened when they decided they were better than the Chiefs and Raiders earlier this season.

  1. This is a heavy underestimation of what the Chiefs team is evolving into. The statistics that "rank" their defense does not speak to the competitive play they have put up against opponents since Tyler Thigpen became their quarterback. I by no means am making a prediction, but believe this article paints a young team in a light that downplays their strengths. Quite frankly, this article seems to deem the Chiefs a team without strengths. You state that Denver will not be "trapped," but the assumptions you make might imply otherwise.

    1. Russell, the Chiefs are not a very good team, but they are capable of beating anybody. Just as the Lions are capable of beating the Giants, that's why they play the games. What I'm trying to point out is that Denver realizes what happened the last time they took a team lightly, and the Chiefs are a team that could be taken lightly. The whole article is about how they are not going to do that this time.

    2. I'm also not trying to imply that the Broncos will be trapped. I simply think they are going to be able to game-plan a different way than simply letting Cutler loose.

  2. Thanks for mentioning my article in here!
Yeah, I think that this week's key to victory is giving the ball to Peyton. One thing is that he knows how to cover up the ball, I noticed he did that almost every time he was hit or tackled in the Jets game. You already talked about all the amazing things he has done in your other article, and Shanny and Jeremy Bates should add a few more running plays to the game plan.
But it's not a trap game, because they shouldn't be expecting to win!

    1. Exactly Henry, they should never expect to win, but they should always play like they are playing a team that is better than they are, even though the Chiefs are the inferior team.

  3. Thank God we didn't have the Lions scheduled this season. That might have made for some big embarrassment, not to mention ruining the Lions dedicated bid at 0-16!

  4. I've heard several pro analysts predicting the Chiefs will make the playoffs next year.

    1. It's a bit early for that. They will have a new Head Coach more than likely, and they will need more veteran presence. The Chiefs definitely don't lack in talent, but the Broncos seem like with playoff experience under their belt they should be the favorites next year.

  5. Hey Sayre,
As always, nice job. I think this rivalry is so interesting in that the home team tends to dominate this divisional rivalry. While KC had a good game here last year and they blew out the Broncos earlier this year, I'm on board. This is like a playoff game mentally that the Chiefs should expect a good old fashioned but kicking because that is exactly what's coming. I expect KC to fight, but the Broncos will dominate this game.

    1. Thanks Chaz. I too think the Broncos will dominate, but they have to want it. They need to crave a victory. They can't just come out and think they are high and mighty cause they beat the Jets. I think this is the week they finally prove they are a team to be reckoned with.

  6. PS: What reputable pro analyst are saying next year is KC's year? Not anyone I've heard. I will say their defense will be more reputable this time next season, but they still have a lot of holes to fill top to bottom.
