With The Fifth Round Pick In the 2009 Draft, The Cleveland Browns Select . . .

Brett CrowJan 1, 2009

The Browns need to pick someone from one of these three positions: defensive end, linebacker, or running back. Now, I would love to be more specific as to who I would like them to pick up and who they should pick up, but right now that's kind of hard. Right now, Cleveland is in the midst of a coach/GM hiring, so their entire offense and defense gameplan could change.

Assuming we stay with the 3-4 defense, Cleveland needs to take a serious look at Rey Maualuga. He is a 6'2", 260-pound inside linebacker out of USC. He is easily the top ILB in the draft class, with 74 total tackles and two interceptions on the year, one of which he took back for a touchdown. This is one hell of a kid and he's played for one of the consistently top school in the nation and done a great job.

But if we go the way of the 4-3 defense, James Laurinaitus. Everyone knows who he is, as he is from Ohio State. But this 6'3", 245-pound middle linebacker has a reason to be as known as he is. He has 121 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble on the year. If we go the way of the 4-3, we should go with Laurinaitus.

Two running backs we could look at, if we wanted a first round running back, would be Chris Wells of Ohio State, or Knowshon Moreno of Georgia. Knowshon had about six YPC, and 16 touchdowns on the year.

Wells had way less impressive stats this year, but that's not to scare anyone away. Wells is a big boy who can move faster and harder then most. Running a 4.48 at 235 pounds is just impressive. However, Wells is still undecided about whether to enter the draft or not.

But personally? I want Brian Orakpo. Brian Orakpo is a 6'4", 260-pound defensive end from Texas. He is the scariest man in this draft hands down. If you haven't seen this guy play yet, get ready to see him on Jan. 5th when the Longhorns play the Buckeyes.

Orakpo is the highest rated DE in the draft with 38 tackles and 10 sacks. And Orakpo comes decorated, having won the 2008 Ted Hendricks Award (Top DE), Bronko Nagurski (Top Defensive Player Award by Football Writers Association of America), and oh yeah, the 2008 Lombardi Trophy (Top Linebacker or Defensive Lineman).
