'Hard to Watch,' Red Sox's Cora Gives Honest Reaction to Garrett Crochet Giving Up 11 Runs vs. Twins
After seemingly turning a corner with four wins in five games entering Monday night, the Boston Red Sox took a huge step backward with a 13-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins that saw Garrett Crochet allow twice as many earned runs (10) as outs recorded (five).
Speaking to reporters after the loss, Red Sox manager Alex Cora called it "hard to watch" Crochet before he finally pulled him with two outs in the top of the second inning.
"As a manager, it's hard to watch. It was kind of like, OK, when are we going to take him out, you know?" Cora said. "At the same time, you still have to cover innings and keep the bullpen quote-unquote fresh, knowing that there's two more games in the series."

Crochet's final line saw him allow 11 runs on nine hits and three walks with no strikeouts. The 11 runs were more than he allowed in his first three starts combined.
ESPN.com noted Crochet is the first pitcher to allow 10 or more earned runs in two or fewer innings in a game after finishing in the top two of Cy Young voting the previous season.
Of the many alarming things to come out of this game for Crochet, his velocity continues to be a situation to monitor. All of his pitches have lost at least one mile per hour compared to 2025.
Crochet's final pitch on Monday night was a 92.7 mph fastball that Ryan Kreidler hit 438 feet for a solo homer.
Both Crochet and Cora said after the game he is fine physically. Crochet did point out his command hasn't been on point so far this season.
"My command, as a whole, has been spotty," Crochet said. "I've gotten away with it a little this early in the year, but tonight, they made me pay. It was weak contact, hard contact, walks, hit by pitch—a little bit of everything."
Monday night marked Crochet's first full game without a strikeout since becoming a starter in 2024. He had one outing with the Chicago White Sox in August 2024 that he was credited as the starter but only threw four pitches before a rain delay led to the game being suspended.
The 11 runs allowed by Crochet is tied for the most un a single game by a pitcher this season. Miles Mikolas gave up 11 runs over 4.1 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 3.
Boston's 13 runs allowed on Monday night were its most in a game this season. The Red Sox (6-10) fell to last place in the AL East with their loss to Minnesota.
