Mets Owner Steve Cohen Weighs In on 7-Game Losing Streak as NY in Last Place in NL East Standings
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is looking at the bright side after Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their losing streak to seven games.
Cohen posted on X after the game that he was encouraged by what he saw from Francisco Lindor, Bo Bichette and Nolan McLean, adding that they "will turn this around!"
The post comes as the Mets sit in last place in the NL East with a 7-11 record. They are tied with the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies for the most losses in the National League.
Perhaps the most encouraging takeaway from Cohen's post was that Juan Soto has progressed to running as he continues to rehab from a calf strain. The four-time All-Star has been out of action since April 3. His original timeline to return was two to three weeks.
Without Soto in the lineup, New York's offense has cratered. The Mets have scored two runs or fewer six times during this seven-game losing streak, including three shutouts.
Despite these early struggles, there are reasons to be optimistic that the Mets will start to play better. McLean is more than living up to his prospect hype with a 2.28 ERA through four starts; and Freddy Peralta has been a solid addition to the rotation.
The lineup is almost certainly going to get better, beyond just getting Soto back at some point. Lindor, Bichette, Mark Vientos and Marcus Semien all have an OPS+ of 75 or worse. Their track record in the big leagues is much better than that.
New York's bullpen has been fine with the sixth-best ERA in MLB (2.94).
It's easy to fall into panic with the Mets, especially after finishing last season with a 28-37 following the All-Star break. But it's still very early and there's too much talent on this team for them to be bad all year.
